  1. Actually, the Khamsin 62 is kinda hard to find. As a self proclamed cheap bastard, I went searching around for a good deal last month. MEC in Vancouver did not carry it nor did I find it in any of the shops within a block. REI only had it in a small. I ended up buying it from a Seattle shop who had sent me a 15% off coupon in the mail. I haven't really used it yet so I can't give a review.
  2. FYI. The Seattle Mountaineers has a basic climbing crevasse rescue class above Paradise that weekend. Half the group will be on Nisqually glacier and the other half doing roped travel and team ice axe arrest below Panorama Point. They will also be out there the next weekend as well.
  3. quote: Originally posted by johnny: Whoa there you guys, whats all the fuss about?? It's only a retail store; they are in busuness to make money not friends. No. REI is a coop, which is owned by the membership (including me). Profits are returned each year in the form of a dividend to the membership (including me). When someone steals from the store or exchanges worn out equipment for new, they are taking money out of my pocket. Some of REI's prices ARE above MSRP, including that silly Bibler tent that I really, really want.
  4. I really want a Bibler Eldorado, but the website shows that they only carry it in green.
  5. The post office has digital scales available for weighing gear and such. Can't beat the price.
  6. Vasque is owned by Red Wing, so they have a few boots in the Red Wing Store on 65th in Seattle or you can have them order boots to try on. Vasque does have one leather boot with a very stiff sole. www.vasque.com

  10. Hi Mike, Don't worry, some of us got the joke. I thought it was pretty funny. ... but don't quit your day job.
  11. FYI.... "The Puget Sound Environmental Learning Center is hosting a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course on February 18-26. Our course is being taught by the Wilderness Medical Institute of National Outdoor Leadership School and trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80 hour curriculum includes standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making, not the memorization of lists. This course is being offered to train our staff and graduate students, but we have not reached our minimum number of participants and need a few more people. We would welcome any individuals who would like to join us for this training. The cost of this course will by $350 in that PSELC is paying the travel and perdiem expenses for the trainers. This course often runs between $450-$500 per participant." Please contact me if you are interested. Paul Bannick or Kristin Poppo, Ph. D. 12. Red Ledge Thunderlight side zip pants. The fabric is called TH4, and it is not as breathable as Gore-Tex. Thin and light, so they probably shread easier, but they are only $32 at Outdoor Emporium in Seattle.
  13. MEC now has lots of clothing on sale, especially their Primaloft jackets. Check the web: www.mec.ca I bought the Northern Lite jacket for 69 cdn and the down sweater for 159 cdn. Let's be warm out there.
  14. I'm making a Canada run this weekend to check out climbing gear shops. Any recommendations? What are the rules on bringing stuff south across the border anyway? Thanks.
