No, there is no tread or heel. When you get the liners, you throw them in the oven until they are soft. Then you stuff them in your boot shells, insert your footbeds, and then put them on. As they cool, the liner hardens to the shape of your boot shell and foot, so the outside of the liner perfectly matches the inside of your shell.
