  1. I disagree. If: "Unfortunately, the cops were unable to pin any of the shitbags in the household, all of whom had records, with this particular burglary. " then how is this the landlord or owner's responsibility? Yes, if they are conducting illegal activity on the property they can (and should) be evicted. But are you suggesting that the landlord evict them based on a random person who calls and claims that the stuff they bought at a yard sale might be stolen??? Ever try to evict someone? Landlord/Tennant laws are pretty heavily weighted in favor of Tenants. Failure for a landlord to evict a tenant based on an alleged crime when the police are unable to bring charges = aiding and abetting? hmmm.. Maybe you just mean the landlord should conduct an independent investigation, make a citizen's arrest and hold the shitbags as prisoners in locked cell in the rental for 3-5 years? Investigating and prosecuting crime is the job of the police department and justice system. (While vigilante justice is the job of the victim and friends.) I'd divvy up the blame about: 90% to the shitbags, 10% to the cops and the system that is impotent to do anything about them. IF they been caught and convicted, I'd find some responsibility for the landlord to give them the boot (at which point they will just relocate to a new shitbaghouse somewhere else)... Frustration with the shitbags and the impotent system isn't a good reason to spread the blame the landlord, or the shitbag's mom, or the gear owner who left his stuff where it could be stolen, or, or... But, good the goods got recovered and good karma to Tvash for getting them to the owner. Now hopefully someone will give the shitbag the nighttime-driveway-whoop-ass they so richly deserve.
  2. Yeah, tune up the landlord. This is all clearly his fault !!

For car rentals, the best rate I found was a special rate that a hotel has pre-arranged with Tricolor car rental. Better than the American companies and better than going to Tricolor direct. Call the Don Carlos hotel and ask them to book for you. http://www.doncarloshotel.com/costarica_hotel_carrentals.htm You don't have to stay at the hotel. The whole thing sounds kind of shady, but was recommended to me and it worked out just great for us, and saved us some cash. Only hitches: checking in/out takes forever as usual, and they are only open business hours. We had a late flight, so I arranged for them to pick the car up at the airport parking lot the next day for an extra couple bucks. I will second the votes for Puerto Viejo/Cahuita (plus the drive there is interesting), and on the other side Montezuma or Mal Pais are very cool (drive there is not as interesting). The favorite of our group was a raft trip on the Pacuare river. Kind of spendy, and typical raft-trip tourists, but... beautiful scenery and a great night at the Pacuare lodge in the middle of the jungle. Take out for the trip is not too far from Puerto Viejo, so you can meet there and skip the minibus trip from San Jose. Avoid San Jose.

  10. I would highly recommend Murren for peace, quiet, and unbelievable views… car free village, only way in is by train/funicular. Take a look at: http://www.wengen-muerren.ch/flashnofsindex-muerren-e.html We stayed at Hotel Eiger. Kind of $$, but everything in Swzland is! If you’re staying in Interlaken, you could ski all the nearby areas on different days: Grindelwald/First area, Murren/Gimmelwald area all are short train rides away. Good area map: http://www.alpineskimaps.com/swit/jungfrau/mapwin.htm Luzern is another nice town if you need to stay a night off the mountain, and it’s quick trip by train to the Zurich airport Other Helpful sites: http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/index.html http://www.ski-europe.com/resorts http://uk.myswitzerland.com/en/intermaps/v04/indexdirect.cfm?lang=en&Reg=&PG=0,Destinations,2,LiveCams I'm jealous.
  11. Ok, I was only using vantage as an example of anchor arrangement not as a place where I'd belay from the top. But for the sake of instruction, imagine (for some reason) you were belaying from the rap anchors on sunshine wall... how would you arrange it, or would you build another anchor back from the edge? Let me ask the question a little differently... What's your setup when the best or only solid anchor is below waist level when your on the best or only stance. A hanging belay is one option, but I was actually thinking more of the situation where your sitting on top with bolts at your feet. The scenarios I've seen in use usually involve some varying degree of bad juju such as: -a cluster with the belay device management -a belayer that will get yanked of a ledge from belaying from a harness - a belayer that will take a fall factor 2 fall in the process - in some cases said ff2 will be onto 3' of static sling Now, all this is bad. What would be good?
  12. This is related to the multipitch sport technique thread... Let's say you're belaying a second from the top of a pitch with 2 anchor bolts placed over /below a ledge (like the ones on the columns at vantage) with not much above the ledge to build a solid anchor. What's your position/setup/technique of choice?
