jja, Mark L. and I skied and broke trail through the deepest snow I have ever seen in the back country. Good runs through old groth forest. You can stay in the woods avoiding open slopes. Nice steep sections. More snow would be nice but ther is enough. Nice to ski into the bar at Hyak to warm up before getting into the car.

The MT Catherine loop has many places to take off into the woods. From Windy Pass turn left up the gentle clear cut or woods towards Silver Peak or right to Nordic Pass and a nice tour folowing the blue dimonds thru the woods. If you take a left at Windy pass and cross the creek you can explore the woods on the other side. It's common access on the groomed road to Windy Pass (FREE). If you have a snow park permit Blewit Pass has an area that's off limits to snomows.

The back side of MT Catherine and tour over Nordic Pass also ski up from Windy Pass towrds Silver Peak. Park at Hyak, you don't have to pay to ski up to Windy Pass. There is also good touring at Blewit Pass. There is a no snowmo area.
