"If any Enron executives got a lump of coal for Christmas, they’d turn around and sell it to a power plant at an inflated price. " - Bob Hirschfeld

I too wish it would stop, but playing devil's advocate, it's the farmers selling to the developers. At least Turlock turned Wal-Mart down.

Again I knew about the cutting, overgrazing, etc. But wasn't the Negev Desert the Negev back then too? Bethlehem is a little north of there and a little west of the Dead Sea. I think we all know why it is called that. I don't think the cedars extended that far south that's all. I could be wrong. It's happened a couple of times before. Anyone know?

Isn't part of "doing their job" getting killed? They are getting paid to wage war, aren't they? I did not get to see the original post, but had to respond to this. Getting killed is not part of the job!!! It is an unfortunate by product of the job!

Hey, ya ever hear of the "cedars of Lebanon"? I was just putting up a quote. And yes I have heard of the cedars of Lebanon. Bethlehem, last time I looked though is south of Jerusalem on the West Bank. Gets kind of arid down there. Now Jesus is said to be a carpenter, as was Joseph, from Nazareth which is in the north of Israel. Probably had cedars there.

Hmmmm . . .So, with global warming there should be an increase in warm weather phenomena, rain, increasing the erosion rate, reducing the mass of the mountains, thus incresing the upward push on the plates and increase the likelyhood of eruptions in the Cascades. Actually thanks for the arcticle. Some interesting stuff. The other links were interesting too. I would be curious to see if they felt there was a link to the bulging near the Sisters and in Yellowstone, or are these part of a regular cycle.

I believe the suicide bombings were aimed at and affected other Iraqis, weren't they, and not U.S. forces? Should we just get out and leave a power vacuum? Or help get some kind of government set up and then pull out? How do you create a peace when there is so much hatred?

Today's quote is related to the original thread topic. Happy? "The Germans decided that Christmas trees would be a nice touch, regardless of whether this had anything to do with the birth of Christ (how many evergreens do you think are indigenous to Bethlehem?) If I bothered to investigate the exact origin of the Christmas tree, I am sure I would find that it was proposed by a German tree farmer who had a lot of evergreens to shift that year. " - Fat Louis

Would love to, but have this damn thing called a job that doesn't let me get away during that time of the year. Family keeps us here during winter break. OK, I did make a round trip to McMinnville in 45 hours last January. Drive, eat, sleep, and drive some more! Some day I'll get up there during the winter.

Yeah Michelle, you're right. Guess that's why I head up that way every summer. I really should be up there. Best friend from college and two sisters in WA, wife's best childhood friend and daughter in school in OR.

"Ah, Mrs. Claus just gave me some lovin'. And Rudolph slipped me some Jägermeister. I'm feelin' better now. Ho! Ho! Ho!" "Carry on." Whew, all is right with the world again!

"Oh, I don’t give (Christmas presents) to my friends. I donate to the Lesbian Left-handed Midgets of Colour Political Awareness Fund instead. You’re on your own (with that) overgrown right-handist heterosexist honky. " - Jay Random, Shiny Happy Gulag

The picture from Medford shows a pretty good shadow for Mount Shasta too. Haven't seen the Seattle one for Rainier yet. Should be a fair sized shadow. Arlen, check your calender. It's a little early yet.

Checking the weather on the Portland Weather Radar at 7:30 Saturday evening, I noticed the radar shadows for Hood, St. Helens and Adams.

I have a friend who worked on a research ship doing Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion studies. Seems to me to be a good source of electrical energy.

Last post on this. Here is the story from today's paper for those who are curious.

"It’s always seemed to me, after all, that Christmas, with its spirit of giving, offers us all a wonderful opportunity each year to reflect on what we all most sincerely and deeply believe in - I refer, of course, to money." - Tom Lehrer, A Christmas Carol

Well, I finally had my big absence group. My 7th period had half of the kids gone today, all with hispanic surnames. Several kids earlier in the day were upset because the taco trucks were not operating today and they wanted to get lunch there.

CBS, cool. Is there any local magnetic problems at Steens Mtn.? Dru, what is the site you linked to. My work denies me access.

After the first three periods, my absence numbers were pretty normal. The Administration said that several of the busses were only about 1/3 full though. I have several legal resident alien students and they all agreed that this boycott thing was stupid and as far as the license thing goes, they said, "work on getting to this country legally and they won't have problems". One student will be 18 in a couple of months and said one should be a citizen to vote, he plans on getting U.S. citizenship.
