20:17 2002-10-15 Killer Russian Bears Knock Off People with Rock Slides Bears push rocks down from mountains to kill people The road between the two Russian resort cities Adler and Krasnaya Polyana is becoming more and more dangerous for drivers and passengers. Piles of rocks tumble down upon people’s heads. Dozens of people have already suffered, and several of them died. Law-enforcement bodies blame road services for this. Twenty-four-year-old resident of the city of Perm, Oleg Sadardinov, took his young wife on a honeymoon to the resort city of Sochi. Oleg’s friend suggested a car ride in the mountains. Driving to the town of Krasnaya Polyana, they suddenly heard a crashing sound. The driver stopped the car, but it was not possible to avoid the falling rocks. Oleg died in a local hospital. Alexander Sergiyenko, the prosecutor of the Adler region, stated that it was one of the latest tragedies along the road. A girl named Maya Nemudraya was the first victim of rocks last year. When the tragedy happened, everyone thought that it was an accident. A similar accident happened less than a month later. The police decided to carry out special measures to prevent any further deaths. The rock slides stopped. Another tragic incident happened a couple of months later. Criminal proceedings were instituted in connection with Oleg Sadardinov’s death. The road was blocked for a while, but all restrictions were lifted within five days. Rocks killed a man on the very same day that the road was opened. Police are trying to find the reason why, but the rock slides continued. Vladimir Tkach, a hunter with 30 years of experience, said this is being caused by wild animals. “I am talking about the dreaded Caucasian bear. I have heard a lot of stories about how it kills cows. A bear sits somewhere in the mountains. As soon as it sees a cow, it starts pushing rocks down. This is the way it kills people. I once saw such a bear with my binoculars. It was there in the mountains, some 300 meters high. We were going to drive several trucks along the road. When our trucks were traveling underneath the place where the bear was, the animal pushed some big rocks down and damaged several trucks. The bears probably do this for their own entertainment. Hunting them is prohibited, and they can find lots of food. I would advise hiring good specialists to shoot these killer bears. There is simply no other way out.” Express Gazeta Translated by Dmitry Sudakov

Its 3 Gorges not 3 Rivers. Flooding some of the most scenic whitewater in China, apparently. Where is Chinese Ed Abbey when needed?

Lurk around on the Todays Topics page until you see the post # is divisible by 25 then make the next post and say Page Top.

The OR bottle holders are 1) cheaper, lighter and more durable than a thermos 2) useful for other things. when I put up sport routes I put the bolts, hangers, washers, wrench, blow bulb etc in the OR parka and hang it off my harness for easy accesibility.

yeah lots of people tell me jubilant is good...only ferns partner got sketched out and they bailed...i think it reminded him of his factor 2 gear ripping fall on Yamnuska or some like dat. i hear it has no crowds either. resolution...maybe you are thinking of late feb and im thinking of early? cause i remember it went into the shade by about 1030 or 11 am, it faces more NE than E. personally i hate those swain ratings they seem all over the map. i will say that i found the 5.8 crux on Frogland to be much harder than the 20 foot "5.10-" section on Black Orph.

1) Resolution Arete in february is in the sun for more like 3 hours than half or all day. 2) As previously noted Black Orpheus is not 10a. 3) judging by what fern said, look out for loose rock on jubilant song. 4) I dont have my guidebook here but isnt Rainbow Buttress much longer than 6 pitches? Like, a dozen or so? [ 10-17-2002, 09:08 AM: Message edited by: Dru ]

save a raptor, dont use lead shot when bird hunting.
-
Boil water, put it in Nalgene (a gatorade bottle can melt) and put it in something insulated - if you dont have the OR bottle parka, just wrap the bottle up in a spare fleece or down jacket before you put it in your pack. It will stay warm all day even if its -30 C out.

Strange News - AP Duct Tape Effective in Wart Removal Mon Oct 14, 4:04 PM ET By DEANNA BELLANDI, Associated Press Writer CHICAGO (AP) - Duct tape, the all-purpose household fix-it with hundreds of uses, can also remove warts. Researchers say over-the-hardware-counter duct tape is a more effective, less painful alternative to liquid nitrogen, which is used to freeze warts. The study was reported in the October issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. In the study, patients wore duct tape over their warts for six days. Then they removed the tape, soaked the area in water and used an emery board or pumice stone to scrape the spot. The tape was reapplied the next morning. The treatment continued for a maximum of two months or until the wart went away. The duct tape irritated the warts, and that apparently caused an immune system reaction that attacked the growths, said researcher Dr. Dean "Rick" Focht III of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He said researchers did not test other kinds of tape, and so they cannot say whether there is anything special about the gray, heavy-duty, fabric-backed tape. Pediatric dermatologist Dr. Anthony J. Mancini of Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago said he uses a form of duct-tape therapy for warts. He combines duct tape with a topical, over-the-counter wart remover for nightly treatments. "The whole point of this is a non-painful approach," said Mancini, who was not involved in the study. The study was conducted at the Madigan Army Medical Center near Tacoma, Wash. It began with 61 patients between the ages of 3 and 22, but only 51 patients completed the study. Of the 26 patients treated with duct tape, 85 percent got rid of their warts compared with 60 percent of the 25 patients who received the freezing treatment. Researchers did not test the duct tape on older adults and also did not study whether warts recurred. The apparent curative powers of duct tape are no surprise to Tim Nyberg, one-half of the Duct Tape Guys, who write books and perform comedy about the adhesive's allure. Nyberg said he and his duct tape partner, Jim Berg, do a shtick that includes duct tape wart removal. "It's the universal panacea," Nyberg said.

What we rapped on was a ROPE, which we brought because the almighty dru said "Jesse bring a Rope!" We rapped because we dragged this thing all the way up there and figured we better go ahead and use it, we could have easily downclimbed around the gulley or downclimbed the gulley itself, not a big deal. I read your posts on blanshard on bivouac, you dont need a rope for the normal route on that either as well the gate opens at 7am and not 8 as you mention. Have you climbed the white dyke before? See ya around jesse I hate to tell you this, but they change the time the gate opens with the season. Hee hee I made you take that useless rope all the way up there SUCKA!!
