the zamberlan calanques is a wicked boot like shoe. i climbed slesse in a pair and never bust out my rock shoes. takes strap on poons good, stiff enough to kick steps. the mtn master is only OK if you are not gonna do any snow. but i trusted them enough to wear soloing up the approach pitches to calculus crack. i get about 2 yrs out of a pair of MMs before the inside heel gets all worn through from my bone spurs. they will only last 6 months if you wear em around town though. the LS boulders are such thin soles they probably wear out in like a week..... i heard good stuff about kayland spiders.

I heard the hot new GU flavour for summer 2003 is Barbequed Snaffle. You can't be an award winning chestbeater unless you knock back 50 GU packets on a 'single push, alpine style, summit or plummet' climb of the dreadly Mt Si Haystackwand.

Did it the first week of July, in a party of 3. Simul climbed to top of ice apron in about 5 hrs from camp diverted from the final couloir up rock on the right side for 8 pitches up to 5.7 (very slow climbing w/plastic boots, minimal rack, seconds one at a time due to no Reverso type devices in use yet). got to summit near 8 PM, went part way down w ridge then down a gully on the s face, then back around the east side and got back to camp on the morraine at 1 AM, had left at 5Am = 21 hrs. i figured a party that did not make all our mistakes could do it in like 14 hrs rt.... but i know a lot of people seem to take the 2 days on it.

lichen, and grass in cracks, are found on every route on slesse, frequently travelled or not, has been my limited experience as for how often e pillar gets done i would guess not as often as navigator wall. as as for ne buttress - that thing got done by like 6-7 parties this weekend and it stilllooks like a cow pasture in some places... i find the schist &gneiss gets much more vegetated, and the granite is lichenous but clean. must be rock chemistry.

of course if Beckey is around the life span of a snaffle is not very long.... BBQ!

see here Flight 810 Buttress is also known as the South Spur in McLane; it's the next buttress left of the SE buttress of the S peak and goes up to the third summit of Slesse (first Southeast Peak).

No that was me & Fern walking underneath you on our way to Flight 810 buttress.... you guys were just where the east spur butts into the face as we were leaving prop cairn area. I coulda sworn one of you had a fully red shirt or jacket on though if you say it was a pack i believe you.
