Although it is now "calendar winter" you would do much better to wait for good "winter conditions", ie cold, frozen, low avvy hazard - instead of warm rain and isothermal avalanche prone snow.

try it sometime. It's easier to get a flat sheet of ice to fracture than it is a rounded piece with a diameter equal to the width of the flat piece.
