Greg, I would not bankrupt myself and my family to destroy some gang leader in LA. This is how I view this. Sadam is not a threat to us. He is making life miserable for the people around him, but my family is 99.9% safe from him. However, if I go take on that gang leader in LA, the chances just rose for me to get attacked. Plus I'm spending all my money to do it. Do you seriously believe that Sadam is a threat to United States security (before we declared war?)? If you do, then I guess it is reasonable for you to support this war with your words. However, if you REALLY wanted to protect your family then you should probably sign up for the military and go hunt down Sadam for them. See, two can play your game. You can make me look like someone who doesn't want to protect my family because I oppose the war. Just as logically, I can make you looke like someone who doesn't want to protect his family because you refuse to get actively involved in the war effort.

I think you tough talkers oughta sign up right now. I'll bet we're gonna see a lot more than 148 deaths this time. This time all our guys gotta start out in a little bitty country where Irag knows where they all are. And we basically have to find one person (does this sound familiar? Where is Osama anyway?). I'll tell you what. Now that war has been declared, I sure as f**K hope those weapons inspectors are correct about the WoMD, for the sake of our 200,000 guys sitting like ducks in the Kuwaiti desert right now. How about this cost of war ? Probably talking about a trillion dollars! Sounds like a good year for a tax cut . Accompanying story talks about medicare insolvency in 2026. Maybe this war will kill even more Americans than we thought? Sadam is a tyrant. We are doing this for the Iraqi people. Uh Right guys? The way you talk about ragheads 'n shit I'm quite amazed at your support of our generosity in terms of American lives and fiscal well-being to save them from that evil guy.

Maybe perhaps one of those lovely pie charts?

Can't you just follow the records and official budgets and see what the money is spent on? Does it need to be scandalous? Or can you just make an informative story? You could find out that x% of your trailpark pass goes to paying rangers to police the trailheads to find trailpark pass violators, that y% goes to printing and distributing the trailpark passes, that z% goes into the general (WAR) fund in D.C. and that only (?) u% actually gets spent on maintenance of the trails and parking lots. Maybe that wouldn't be scandalous, but it would probably be informative and it would be fairly easy I think (for newsy people who are used to doing FOIA type of stuff). I think I remember reading on the internet that the GAO had some pretty negative stuff to say about this. That would probably be easy for you guys to look up too.

I just had a feeling I was onto something here. I was attempting to craft the ultimate troll in terms of the ratio of amount of response/amount of effort required to start and propogate. BWAH HA HA HA HA!!!

You forgot the "Ca-ching" part.

"side effects not significantly different from sugar pill"

Iain, many people every weekend are proving your assertion correct on Mt. Si.

What about stuff above a sequence of bodyweight-only stuff?

Is she really banned, or is this just another Traskian attention ploy, like the time he lost his job .

Six billion . Back to school for you Iain. No wonder you couldn't figure out that mind reading site

You better be pretty freakin' sure that nothing bad is gonna happen because in that situation the kid is powerless. The kid trusts his Dad completely, so there is no real 'consent' given. It is unlikely that a sixteen year old fully comprehends mortal danger. He'll just be going on the word of his Dad. I'm not a himalaya climber, but from what I've read, there is not "freakin' surety" that nothing bad is gonna happen. No matter what you do. Though people argue that climbing is no more dangerous than driving a car (which is probably a better argument when a sixteen year old is involved), I think that this is probably a losing argument when the 'climbing' being discussed is Everest.

Why do you care? For a bunch of self-proclaimed individualists, this board contains people quick to ridicule others for doing things different than them. You are so right Attitude. Those guys on training for Rainier on Si are not hurting anyone. Not getting in anyone's way. I think people should mind their own business and definitely not ridicule them. On the other hand, what is wrong with describing something with which you were surprised at? Talking about something that makes you wonder? That's how I felt about those guys carrying their meticulously packed Rainier gear up Mt. Si. It just brings many questions to mind. Boring questions perhaps, but there's not much interesting going on on this board right now. I had read of this phenomenon on the board but was genuinely surprised at the prevalence of the Rainier packs. Sorry to sound like I'm belittling them. So anyway, I am NOT laughing at those guys. I could see how there are probably much worse ways to get in shape to climb Mt. Rainier. More power to 'em. They probably won't be those punters that end up slowing the whole group down and costing the summit!

Time to bring this one up to the top again!

Iain, You make some interesting observations. I remember someone asking me if I went climbing a lot. My first reaction was to say, "No, not really". Which is true in an absolute sense, compared to other people I read about here. But when focused into my own little world, the answer more pertinent is, "Yes I pretty much spend every minute I have for recreation on climbing, or training for climbing". As for people training for Rainier on Si, I wasn't intending to laugh at them so much as merely marvel . I wonder if those guys have their packs packed so carefully as to be carrying x days of food, toothpaste and toilet paper? There were a couple of cool-looking cracks up on the Haystack up there; however, the approach is a bit of a deterrent. Anybody here done any of them? That big chimney with all the chockstones looks like it'd be a hoot (seriously) in a mossy chimney kinda way.
