Malloy Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 On the morning of Saturday Oct. 26th we set up camp at the unmarked campsite after the bridge on the left side of the road. After returning to camp later in the day we discovered that our campsite had been robbed. They stole 2 Marmot sleeping bags, a 2 burner propane stove and several other items. We spoke to a climber named "S" who told us he spoke with 2 suspicious middle-aged individuals who were driving a silver extended cab pick up truck (80's model Chevy or Ford) who were hanging around when they arrived around 1:30pm. Said they weren't camping and had no interest in making conversation. Beware! Would hate for this to happen to anyone else. And because we decided to roll back to the city Saturday night, our climbing companion hit a 5pt buck and totalled her car just 10 miles West of 11worth. What a buzzkill. Quote
Water Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 major bummer. I always fear this even with a basecamp in the BC, but ungodly more so if i'm in any relative proximity to a road. if you have renters (or homeowners?) insurance i've at least been told mine covers this, assuming your gear cost hits the deductible. (two sleeping bags, stove, etc very well could). It doesn't fix the problem but it helps take some sting out if your ins will cover the replacement costs. Quote
Malloy Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Good point Water, I do have a renter's policy and I'm hoping I can get something back through that. After reading reports of prowlers at the Index parking lot, it's not too suprising really. Lesson learned... Quote
alpine et Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 ...didn't steal a BD tent did they? http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/spo/4157264244.html Quote
dougd Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Bummer about the thefts and the wrecked car no doubt, but at least you got some good eating deer parts out of the deal… You DID get the backstraps and liver out of that 5pt didn't you?! d Quote
Pete_H Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Yeah cutting up a deer on the side of Hwy 2 wouldn't have been conspicuous or anything. Quote
Malloy Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 We didn't, but I suspect the Navy vet that stopped to "help us out" stuck around and made something of it. That deer could have fed a family all winter - he was a fatty. Quote
Malloy Posted October 29, 2013 Author Posted October 29, 2013 No tent, just 2 Marmot down sleeping bags (Sawtooth & Angel Fire I think). That was the most expensive of the loot. Quote
dougd Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 he was a fatty. YUM! I keep a good knife in my rig always… Just in case… d Quote
Phil K Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 Roadside camping is the perfect place for a Wallmart Pup Tent. Maybe a Sears Roebuck sleeping bag too, come to think of it. Quote
