jlunsford Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Dallas Kloke Memorial Work Party April 23 @ Mt. Erie - Dallas worked for many years on Mt. Erie and used to set up work parties with Anacortes Parks and Recreation to help do everything from cleaning garbage off the summit to repairing and maintaining trails. On April 23rd we will continue in that tradition. Please meet us at Ray Auld Drive at the base of Mt. Erie at 9am. There we will break into smaller groups that will pick up trash, prune trails, pull scotch broom and other tasks. We will work until about 11:30am. Please bring gloves and appropriate clothes to work on the mountain. Pruning saws and loppers would be helpful to bring if you have them and want to work on that project. The City will provide additional tools and supplies. Call 360-293-1918 with any questions about the work party. After the work party Solid Rock Climbers for Christ is organizing a memorial for Dallas on Mt. Erie. Please see their website for more information on that event. http://www.srcfc.org/Events/DallasKlokeMemorialWorkday
JasonG Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Awesome, thanks for posting! I plan on being there, and made the announcement at the SAC meeting last night....
Calvinclimber Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Jonn, thanks for posting this and taking on work party part. In preparation for memorial gathering I prepared a photo book of his climbing including what he and others wrote. It was such a blessing to know him. I'm planning on doing what he calls the best route at Mt. Erie, Zig Zag, in mountain boots and tied in with a bowline on a coil (sans pitons) as he suggested in his guidebook. Hope to meet many of his friends on the 23rd. Calvin
JasonG Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 For all the folks who plan on attending, if you could say so on this post it will help with the preparations. Thanks, and I hope to see a lot of folks Saturday at 0900!
mattp Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 I'm planning on it and I'll be looking to climb with somebody afterward. Thanks for organizing.
mattp Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Question about Zig Zag: do you climb what Dallas called Zig Zag for pitch 2, and miss out on "Undercover" or whatever he calls it?
JasonG Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks Matt, I will look for you and I am sure we can get you a partner. Right now I have no idea who I am climbing with so it could be me! I don't know about Zig-Zag, we can talk tomorrow....
mattp Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I believe that the way Dallas illustrated the route in his book, this fine pitch is not part of the original ZigZag route:
JasonG Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Oh yeah! I've gone either way and that is certainly better if it isn't weeping....
mattp Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I look forward to clipping a few roses and maybe picking a couple ticks in memory of Dallas tomorrow.
bwwakaranai Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Wish I could make it. If I were not committed to an Easter egg hunt with the little one I would. Beautiful looking day out at Erie, just the kind he thrived on. Peace, -B
mattp Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 It was a good event today. Here's Calvin, leading ZigZag, with mountain boots and bowline on a coil for a harness: the Dallas Kloke challenge. It turns out this IS part of the original ZigZag route.
JasonG Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Great Photo Matt!!! Dallas would've been proud of Calvin's lead. Thanks to one and all who attended- we got a lot of trail work done, and climbed Dallas's classic Zig-Zag under a warm sun. You couldn't ask for a better day to remember one of our local legends. And, as least as far as I'm concerned, Dallas kept the ticks at bay. Thanks!
deanolin Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 (edited) My 2 boys and I had a great time! John, thanks again for organizing. It was great to be involved in Dallas Klokes' memorial day. Aaron and his "Trail Bosses" Edited April 25, 2011 by deanolin
curtveld Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Found some real evidence of the DKMWP yesterday! Stumbled upon the uber-obscure Black Wall and all the prickly shrubs along the base were neatly trimmmed. No doubt, Dallas was smiling.
JasonG Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Cool! Give me a ring next time you are up for Erie and need a partner Curt, I need to get back in climbing shape.....
