denalidave Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 (edited) Trip: Various Alaska 2010 - Date: 7/5/2010 Trip Report: Ok, here is a snapshot of my weekend adventures for the first half of my summer. Not any "real climbing", but I did bag a few nice peaks and did some super cool shizzizl. There is much to sift through, but I feel there are a few jems that make it worth the digging... You tell me? So check it, yo. Let's start out with a lil mt porn in the Alaska Range, tourist style... [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] When the pilot picked me up the next day, it was just me on the flight out. He said something about a "touch and go over the next ridge". I thought he was referring to some turbulence. No, he was carving a runway for later that day. As soon as we started to dive down the steep face, he said, "I'm gonna come back and ski that later today". Sure wish I had an extra few hundred bucks and 4 more hours... [video:youtube] My favorite still from that trip... OK, nuf of the range. But if you want the long version still pics, go here... Alaska Range Overnighter Tourist Style April 2010 This is a nice hike up Mt Cecil, on the Kenai River. Fun ski, but the late season post-holing sucked... [video:youtube] This is an overnight trip I did in the Chugach... Bagged a small peak but may have had the name wrong in the video. Hmmm, those must not have uploaded??? Oh yeah, I flew home to see Tom Petty at the Gorge. 5th row Beeoshh! What a show!!! Joe Cocker rocked the house too. The new album MOJO, rocks! HERE - Tom Petty at the Gorge 2010 [video:youtube] Next up, (Sorry, I tried to load the best pano shots but kept getting snaffled, even though I size em down.) Ummm, well? It's late. I'm tired. And, got like, all this crap to do... So, I think that is all I can post for now. Bummer, as I barely scratched the surface. Oh well, I know I WAS THERE!!! Edited July 14, 2010 by denalidave Quote
denalidave Posted July 6, 2010 Author Posted July 6, 2010 Oh yeah, I almost forgot about these... [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] [video:youtube] Quote
wfinley Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 What's up with all that blue sky? I live here and have yet to see it. You're posting nothing but propaganda. Visitors be warned -- it's never this nice! Quote

John Frieh Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 [video:youtube] BOW DOWN :: :: Or... at least for the first 10 seconds of the video or so... For perspective if you put half dome on top of el cap (yes the one pink climbed) and then sprayed ice on the side that is what you are looking at. Quote
WCC Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Was that Cecil Rhode Mountain that you climbed? If so, did you venture all the way to the southeast summit (Peak 4576)? I'm interested in that ridge. How difficult was it? Quote

John Frieh Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Actually 1600 meters BOW DOWN: Blood From the Stone Why Sean is such a badass Quote
pink Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 that's pretty cool, that must be one of the larger rock faces in alaska. Quote
John Frieh Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Word. The bird's line on the east face of moose's tooth is about the same length. Different perspective of Dickey (on the left)... the one on the right (in the clouds) is Barille which is as tall as half dome Quote
pink Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 john, do you know what the tallest rock wall in the world is? Quote
John Frieh Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I would guess the Rupal face on Nanga Parbat (4100 meters) but that is a lot of snow and ice. I'm sure the cc.com brain trust could give you 10 different answers and 3 pages of spray if you asked them Quote
TrogdortheBurninator Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 According to David Roberts in his new Washburn Bio, the two biggest "precipices" in the world are Rupal Face and Wickersham Wall. Although I'd imagine that Roberts' view of the Wickersham wall is slightly biased. Quote

If so that would hardly qualify as a wall... it's even been skied. Quote
eldiente Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 What counts as a wall? Throw a can of beer from the top, the first thing it hits is where you measure from to determine the height of the wall. Quote

I'm interested in that ridge. How difficult was it? Not sure if this is the same peak you are asking about, but it is called Mt Cecil... It is a non-technical walk-up/scramble. However, there are certainly more spices lines, but it is pretty chossy if you choose to take a more direct line. Quote
