CollinWoods Posted September 21, 2009 Posted September 21, 2009 So i persuaded my pops to allow me and my brother to stay an extra week or so on our family trip to Hawaii(Big Island or Oahu) so that the both of us could packpack and climb. Has anyone done this? Know any good areas? Experiences? Thanks. Quote
rocky_joe Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 If you're looking to do a little bouldering, there is a sweet crag on the north shore at Waimea bay. lots of different features, some stuff might be as hard as V4-5. didn't really get a good feel for it...no shoes and too many people. have fun. QITNL Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Here's a link for climbing http://picasaweb.google.com/rch.com and hiking http://www.rcarchive.com/hhg/ on Oahu.  I used to have a few more links but they seem to be defunct.  There isn't really any backpacking on Oahu - nothing I would recommend. There are a few campsites on the beach, but they are all pretty sketch. You certainly wouldn't want to leave anything of any value in your tent. Some spots are locals-only, if you get my drift.  There are a couple of hostel-type places where you can pitch a tent; not cheap nor much of a wilderness experience, but a little more safe.  On northshore Kauai is the Na Pali Coast. Pretty famous. I think they just did some horror movie about it.  http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dofaw/nars/reserves/kauai/honoonapali  Don't know much about the Big Island, sorry.  Oh, here's one more: http://www.rockclimbinghawaii.com/outdoor_main.html Quote
shapp Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 I have climbed at mokeluia (spelling?) on Oahu, a little trad but mostly bolt sport on basalt. Mostly 5.10 and above, with a couple easier. Pretty fun for a full day. It is up on the North shore and overlooks the beach where they filmed the crash scene for Lost. PM and I can give some beta. Shapp Quote
111 Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 If you are looking for something with a little alpine feel... Quote
denalidave Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 If you can make it to Kauai, the Na Pali Coast Trail is really cool this time of year. Just backpacking but it has some pretty big exposure on some of the sections. Quote
CollinWoods Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Thanks everyone. I cant wait to make it out, it all looks so differnt. Thanks for all your help! Quote
bvl Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I hiked the Na Pali coast this summer, and it was great. As far as the big island goes, Mauna kea is a 10 minute hike, and it is amazing at sunrise, a must do if are into mountains and on the big island. You'll probably be fighting crowds at sunset. We had it to ourselves at sunrise. The road up is great, 5 miles of gravel, the rest is paved, and the gravel is good. You could also hike Mauna loa, it is about 6-7 miles and around 3,000 feet. Probably many others, that is what I know of. It doesn't get much better than wearing your down jacket in Hawaii in August, and swimming at a beautiful beach 2 hours later. Quote
