Cpt.Caveman Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 I have done a lot of climbing at that stateline crag and emerald bay. I lived there for some time. I dont recommmend the gritty granite bye the river just across the NV border but everything at Donner is killer especially Snowshed wall and everything at Emerald Bay is good too. I suggest Lovers Leap as well. Have fun! Quote
freeclimb9 Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 Lover's Leap is close to the Lake (like within 25 miles), and is incredible. There's a magic to the Sierras, and I hope you tap into it. best regards, Will Quote
mattp Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 I'm with Will. Lover's Leap is one of the coolest crags I've ever climbed on. It has great climbs in just about all grades, and the place is absolutely gorgeous. I've climbed at Donner Summit, as well, and while it has some good climbs it just doesn't compare. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 That is where I learned to Chop Chop at LLeap! Quote
Erwin Posted July 24, 2001 Author Posted July 24, 2001 How do you get to Lover's Leap and what kind of climbing and climbers are there (sport, TR, trad). I am looking forward to it. I have always had a blast in Tahoe whether its boozing, gambling, snowboarding or biking. Unfortunately, the ladies there seem to be in low abundance. Any of you local folks ever bike the rim trail. I am not much of a biker, but riding that almost made me one. great views of the lake and a great ride. Thanks for the info and directions to Lover's leap would be great, although I am sure I can ask the locals Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 For TR I recommned Emerald Bay, Sport you can find some at nearly every crag. Check out the Volcanic Crags along the highway between Truckee and the lake. Lots of cracks at the leap and the Famous Travellers Buttress. You need a guidebook I got one I will loan you. Quote
erik Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 erwin, it is off of hwy 50. pretty hard to miss. it owuld be the huge granite crag. Quote
Kyle Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 Lover's Leap rules! If I had a week to spend in the Tahoe area, I'd probably just climb at the Leap every day- the rock is outstanding and amazingly fun. I'm sure you'll get better directions before you go, but it's roughly 17 miles west of Lake Tahoe on Hwy 50, then look for a turn-off to the left just before the Strawberry Lodge. Go about a mile to the road-end and campground/parking lot. Quote
Erwin Posted July 24, 2001 Author Posted July 24, 2001 Â Is the campground there just for climbers or is there other stuff to do? I got to bum a ride and it would be a lot easier if my ride has something to do. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 There is not much out there other than climbing if I recall. River rafting or kayaking maybe.. Hiking. Quote
nolanr Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 Sorry to get off topic, but damn Caveman, how did you get that little icon thingy shooting a lightning bolt out of his finger or whatever? I'm a techno dunce and then you bust out stuff like that, I feel so unworthy. Quote

Erwin Posted July 25, 2001 Author Posted July 25, 2001 Just wondering if any of you guys and gals have climbed out there. Will be there for a week with the lady and looking for some routes. I hear there is some climbing near Emerald Bay and I have seen climbers on the rock outside the tunnel you pass approaching Stateline from the Nevada side (is this bolted or trad lines). Sorry about being so vague, I don't know the road names. Any info helps and this will keep me away from losing all my money at the casinos. Is there a guidebook for the area, I didn't see one at one of the climbing stores in Portland. Thanks a lot. Quote
mikeadam Posted July 25, 2001 Posted July 25, 2001 There is an excellent guidebook called "Tahoe Rock" published by Falcon Press. The main climbing store in Reno is called Reno Mountain Sports and has maps and good information. Donner Summit has a high concentration of excellent granite climbs in a small area. Have fun! A few photos of the area can be found here: http://alpinelite.com/blissed_out.htm http://alpinelite.com/split_rox.htm Mike Quote
