billcoe Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Link to NY times Great writer, lived a full life. Fear and Greed especially, but anyone who wants to read a great literary work, I hope you take a moment and read one of the all time greats "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich". Man, amazing work, I'd almost forgotten about reading it it's been so long, it literally is one day in this guys life, and a very worthy read. I never did read Gulag Archipeligo. Quote
Mal_Con Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 Agree on that I also tried GA but lost interest after the first 400 pages, so it goes. Quote
octopuswithafez Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 "A state of war only serves as an excuse for domestic tyranny." Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Also check out a collection called "Kolyma Tales" by another author, whom AS wanted to co-author Gulag Arch. with. Quote
builder206 Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 When he came to the US in the early 70s after being exiled from Russia, he began attacking us for what he thought was too much liberty, our individualism, our lack of love for The State, our distrust of power and centralized strength---the very foundations of American constitutional liberalism established by the Founding Fathers. His diatribes came off as almost a validation of the commie's accustaions that he was a quasi-facist. He had his own idosyncratic notions of freedom, notions that did not at all match our Western ideals. Merely being an anti-communist hardly makes a person an angel or a hero. Quote

I suspected he was thinking we were a bunch of unappreciative whining asswipe pussies always constantly and unnecessarily bitching and moaning about all the negatives of our amazing country. Maybe he'd perused this site, cause I see it a lot here myself. Quote

billcoe Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 Bill....I dont see us as whining about our country....just our government. If by country you define it as the land, nothing to whine about there eh Kev, we are blessed with an amazing richness and natural diversity that has protected and buttressed us from huge natural disasters. As far as the government goes, check out current events/whats happening in China now just as a point of comparison. Quote
