Guest Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 So here's my question: My [rock and mountaineering]climbing partner and I are really interested - and stoked - to get into ice and mixed climbing. We've borrowed tools and vertical crampons and, in light of the holiday, are planning on heading north next weekend. We have been looking at Banff and Lillooet (and anything in between)... Does anyone have any recommendations for locations for sweet top rope-able routes (preferably near a cool mountain town)?? I really appreciate any and all recommendations and help. Thanks! Quote
wayne Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Marble canyon. Learn to lead if you can though Quote
G-spotter Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Go to Canmore and climb in the Junkyards, Haffner etc. Lillooet is a good climbing destination but is far from being a "cool mountain town". Quote
Guest Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 great. i appreciate the help... are there good toproping options near canmore? Quote
tomtom Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Not quite what you asked, but if you want lots of good top roping options, go to the Ice Park in Ouray, CO. Ouray is a cool mountain town. Quote
kurthicks Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Banff/Canmore/Parkway TR sites that require no leading and have no avalanche hazard: Haffner Creek & Marble Canyon (Tokkum Pole) Canmore Junkyards Balfour Wall Tangle Creek Quote
sean_beanntan Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 The Grotto is an easy first well protected lead 5km from canmore, otherwise I agree Balfour and Haffner are great Quote
fern Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 If you have never climbed ice/used crampons & tools then getting to the tops of some of the places listed to set the TR is likely going to be very risky. Quote
