just my 2 cents:

The first two screws wouldn't have even kept the climber off the ground.

 

While true, this step is 3 pitches up and they WOULD keep a fall to a 3m flop onto the ledge rather than a 3m flop onto a ledge followed by very quick descent of 120m of ice,snow, and talus with fatality waiting at the bottom. But 1 would be just as good as 2 for this purpose.

Maybe they were placing the screws on steeper ground for practice? Since the pitch is only WI3, maybe they should just solo it, like the rest of us?? I am surprised you didn't mention the penalty slack that would have caused the leader to deck no matter how many screws were in...
