Colin Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 I just bought a new peice of rope and would like to mark the middle of it. I know that Blue Water sells a "rope marking pen," but I was wondering if just using a Sharpie damages the nylon or has any other detrimental effects. Quote
Guest Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 Try this - http://www.barrabes.com/barrabes/product.asp?pf_id=4748. I ordered one and am very happy with it. It is so much better than felt tip markers. I think Beal marks their ropes with the same stuff. Quote
Yossarian Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 Sharpies are fine. No damage to rope. Cheap. Quote
Lambone Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 I second that. The PMI rep. said sharpies are fine. Quote
Paul_C Posted July 24, 2001 Posted July 24, 2001 third, that. I have a BW pen cause the store is right around the corner and they are cheap, but if they aren't convenient then Sharpies are all fine. Paul C Quote
none_dup1 Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 Any permanent pen that does not smell like heavy solvent (ie, gets you stoned!) is cool for marking ropes. Sharpie pens do not get me baked, and are thus fine for marking ropes. Quote
Dru Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 I found the problem of getting high from markers is you end up with coloured nostrils. never had that problem gas huffing just loss of brain tissue and persistent headaches. Quote
Erwin Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 Gas Huffing and Sharpie Sniffing Washingtonians. You guys make me sick. Ever hear of nitrus. Hippie crack will solve all your problems, especially having an excess of brain tissue. Good to know Sharpies are fine on rope, though Quote
jtflyfisher Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 SSSSSSssssssssss. There you go, that'll be five bucks. The next is only four if you bring back the balloon. Have a good show! [This message has been edited by jtflyfisher (edited 08-24-2001).] Quote
Dru Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 What did the deadhead say when the acid wore off? "Who is this band? They suck!" Quote
Erwin Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 I went to school in Burlington, Vermont. The deadheads there (and phishheads in more particular) don't need a show or a reason to get a tank, they just do. Ice climbing in Vermont: Awesome (respectively) Rock climbing in Vermont: Go to NH or NY Â Quote
glacier_dup1 Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 I've always just cut a notch in the middle of my rope. It doesn't wash out that way. Quote
Matt Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 I've climbed ice in Smuggler's Notch near Mt. Mansfield. Vermont ice is pretty nice. Quote
Erwin Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 Glacier, Good call. If we ever climb I'll be happy to belay ya. and bring a camera so you can be on faces of death. smugg's ice is nice. snowmobiles in the notch suck ass. half hour of work left. someone please say something funny. Quote
haireball Posted August 24, 2001 Posted August 24, 2001 I get longer-lasting markings using a slender sewing needle to weave a contrasting color thread into the rope's sheath. Since it's woven throughout the sheath, my middle mark wears at the same rate as the sheath, and lasts the life of the rope... although I haven't really paid much attention since I predominantly use twin-ropes anymore... Dru Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 Erwin, its nitrOUs, are you sure you weren't trying Nitric instead? And what do you mean by calling me a Washingtonian? Quote
Erwin Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 I don't know where your from, but I do know that being from Oregon (Actually orginally the Northeast), I have been mocked by them Washingtonians on the few postings I've made. Oregonians unite And spelling must be off due to the Nitrous in my more youthful days. Quote
Dru Posted August 25, 2001 Posted August 25, 2001 From the NE to Oregon - you go from one Portland and/or Salem to another one? That could be convenient, like keeping the same number when you switch area codes. Did you try nitrous at a Dead show or were you an EMT with a tank of it in the first aid kit? (Ow, my hangnail... where is the nitrous??) Quote
