carolyn Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I was referred by chance, luck, and maybe even skill to a local theatre company putting on a production of K2. They are asking me to teach the lead actor to climb (ice), help them out with terminology and a realistic set. Its a pretty cool gig! Anyway, they want me to come up with a schedule to work with the actor and other odds and ends. They also want me to tell them my fee. Ive never worked in a theatre setting, yet I feel like an idiot because I have no clue what is reasonable. They are a non-profit. I want to make money off of this gig, yet I dont want to rip them off. Anyone out there with theatre or film experience? Anyone seen the play? Its based off the movie K2 (same author). The play and movie are far from the same, though. Quote
fern Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I think the movie was actually based on the play Quote
carolyn Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 ya, thats what I meant to say. I read the script yesterday and watched the movie again tonight (total cheese factor). Very different! Quote
carolyn Posted January 26, 2007 Author Posted January 26, 2007 Fern- am I gonna see you out here in a month? (just the friendly reminder you asked for! Quote

AlpineK Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I saw the movie back a while ago. I know people who've seen the play here in Seattle; they liked it. I can't tell you what to charge: # of hours you expect X hourly rate. That's probably not much help, but you should think about how much time you need to budget to train actors to pretend to climb. Good luck Quote
wfinley Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I doubt you need this as it's only one gig... but if you do alot of these trying finding the equivalent of this survey for the state of WA: https://www.forakergroup.org/store/index.cfm?ProductID=65&do=detail Quote
olymand Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 How much you charge really depends on what kind of theatre they are. If this was Seattle Rep then you could charge a lot more than you could for a non-union theatre. Few of the local theatres have much money, so most of the actors and tech people are working long hours for little or nothing. You might ask for $50 a rehearsal and see how many they want you to come to. You could get 10 times as much for film, but this isn't film. Since this kind of gig is similar to fight directing, you might contact safd (society of american fight directors) and ask what is scale. hope that helps. Quote
marylou Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 I worked on that play in the late 1980s. We did the first workshop production of it at Pioneer Square Theatre. Carolyn, I work in theatre, but since I do it for money, and not because it's my passion. I never work in small community theatres and almost never work freelance (ie not represented). I'm not sure how much to ask from them moneywise. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me, I do have a bit of experience in this type of work. Quote
