catbirdseat Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 What do you do on a rainy day when you have two bushels of quince? You make quince jelly, of course. Not many even know what a quince looks like. Stores rarely sell them. The main reason for this is that they bruise easily in transit and they must be cooked before eating. Quince: Sweetmeat to Kings Quince makes a great dessert baked in the oven with some sugar on top. Just peel, core and quarter. If anyone wants some quince, I could bring some to Pub Club on Tuesday. Keith_Henson Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 the quince bush is also very ornamental--though if you want the fruit you have to buy "fruiting" one. I have one espaliared on my fence and it produces red floweres early in the year. I got mine from Burpee about 15 years ago. Watch the stems though. They produce wicket stickers--one of which puntured the tire of my mountain bike! Quote
catbirdseat Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 The fruiting quince tend to be more bush-like. The Smyrna is an attractive and relatively compact tree, but sometimes spring rain causes mildew on the leaves unless you spray. Cook's Jumbo is not really very attractive and I couldn't recommend it in the city. Quote
Dechristo Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 When I was a kid, the neighbors had a quince bush, but never did anything with the fruit. We found the fruit made fine hand-grenades when a firecracker was pushed into them. Hold the armed quince in your hand with your arm cocked in throwing position, torchman lights cracker, and throw that sucker at the enemy! It all worked great until one blew-up mid-throw: the whole side of my head was a sticky quince mess. Quote
