altasnob Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Climb: Goat Rocks-Old Snowy Date of Climb: 7/15/2006 Trip Report: Ives, Big Horn, and Curtis Gilbert from the top of Old Snowy Goat Lake and Mt. Rainier Mt. Adams from Snowgrass Flats Big Horn from Cispus Basin Approach Notes: Mostly melted out with just patchy snow throughout the Goat Rocks above 6,000 ft. You can get just about anywhere you need to go without crampons or ice axe. Quote
fettster Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Looks like a lot of fun! How was the scramble up to Old Snowy? Are the rocks very big? Were there many water sources between Snowgrass Flats and Old Snowy? How busy was the alpine camp by Snowgrass Flats? Quote
altasnob Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 The scramble up Old Snowy is very easy (the PCT goes to within 500 ft and there is an easy to follow trail from there; my dog made it to the top). Plenty of water all the way up because there are still quite a few snow patches melting out. You'll definitely encounter other people in Snowgrass Flats but it wasn't too crowded. I'm guessing the alpine camp you are referring to is the one with rock wind shelters built, up above Snowgrass Flats. It was empty when I passed it on the way up. I think most people, inlcuding our group, assumed it would still be snowed in when in fact, its completely melted out. We also crossed Cispus Pass on the trip and it didn't appear many parties had been through before us this year (the only prints in the snow/dirt were from goats). Again, there's still some snow but no trouble getting through in just boots. Quote
wdietsch Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Altasnob ... judging from the light in your photos I'm guessing you were on top after we departed. Here are a few turns down the Northeast slope heading back to camp in McCall Basin. Quote
sobo Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 wes, Is that a dog? Looks like he's having a blast! and who packed in the goddamn kitchen pantry? Quote
wdietsch Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Yep ... that's my buddy's dog As for the kitchen table and cot ... we found then stashed in the trees ... horse packers no doubt .. came in real handy Quote
sobo Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Horse packers... Pack it in, leave it there. Glad you had a nice time. Snow looked sweet. Quote
