  1. Hey, thanks for the replies. Any recommendations for places to eat dinner in Bend on a Saturday night?
  2. It's been quite a while since I've been to Smith Rock. Can someone tell me if Monkey face is visible on the drive in, or do you have to hike to see it? I'd like to take my parents to the park, but with my dad's knee am not sure how much hiking we can do. Anyways, mostly just curious if we'd be able to see it.
  3. I did not know that, but that would definitely explain it. The style of the Verticals does seem a little different than what I see of the Comforts.
  4. I've seen solid reviews for the Dynafit TLT Comforts, but can only find the Vertical ST's for sale online, and I don't see the Comforts listed on the Dynafit company site either. Have these been discontinued?
  5. Anyone know how Mt Jefferson access is shaping up right now? Is any of the roads to Pamelia or Sentinel Hills/JP drivable yet?
  6. I would check out some of the free Garmin GPS topos here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/ Here's the WA map at least: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/95/
  7. Saw this in the news this last week: http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/01/black_hawks_leave_their_oregon.html From the article: "All 12 of the Oregon Guard's Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopters plus 135 soldiers including pilots, crew chiefs, maintenance and support staff are leaving for a 400-day deployment to Iraq. By Sunday, four pilots and a lone Black Hawk borrowed from Idaho will remain. For the first time, the entire fleet goes -- and with it the Guard's ability to perform the high-mountain rescues, searches and body recoveries that have come to symbolize its stateside role."
  8. Sad news. After reading about an accident this afternoon I was taken aback when I got home and overheard "fatality". Sounds like she was a person who really got out there and lived life!
  9. About the same info as the CNN link, but a few more details added: http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/10/missing_climber_found_alive_on.html
  10. Good stuff! Props to the S&R teams, non-S&R volunteers, and all others who helped out.
  11. Nice work. Do you have any pictures of the moat?
  12. Interesting, my impression has been that Curtis Gilbert would not be scalable by a dog. Nice work! No helmet for the pooch though huh? In those latter shots are those fresh patches of snow and ice or remnants still from last winter?
  13. I'm headed to Three Sisters Wilderness for the first time later this week. Coming from PDX is it it quicker to take highway 22 or 20 to get over to Sisters, OR?
  14. Actually this point doesn't have an official name, but we gave it that nickname when we were there. "The Wedge" is just to the NW of Jumbo Peak: http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=46.31750,-121.77336&z=15&t=T The Dark Divide is located between Mt Adams and MSH, south of Randle, WA. Here are a couple links: http://www.wta.org/action/current-issues/dark-divide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Divide As alluded to motorbikes have left their mark on the landscape. Here's an example:
  15. We saw this block of rock hiking the Dark Divide a bit over a week ago. Anyone ever climb this? I don't know how good the rock is, but the northeast (right) face looks like a good challenge.
  16. Anyone ever injured their peroneal tendon? The last two times out hiking over the last month I've had pain on the outside of my right ankle (along the outside of the "ball" on the end of the fibula). Wearing tennis shoes I don't get the pain but I do with my hiking boots on so it seems the pressure of the boot exasperates the issue. This is the best info I've found so far: http://www.footphysicians.com/footankleinfo/peroneal-tendon.htm I haven't noticed any weakness or instability, but certainly the pain. It also feels like something (I'd guess tendon) is sliding a bit when I "probe" with my fingers along the outside of my ankle. Any similar experiences out there?
  17. Nice work, those shrunds look a bit intimidating. As good as the pics are the views must've been stellar in person.
  18. Check out this July 3 TR: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7968134
  19. Great stuff! That's cool to see Bend like that. Those taken with a dSLR? I think my camera would have a tough time in low lighting like that.
  20. Good stuff, nice to get a peek at the lakes too. And nice work keeping your eyes protected. Never want to lose your peeps!
  21. Cool, is there pretty much a trail or boot path all the way to the summit? Is it still worth bringing an ice axe?
  22. Anyone been up by Strawberry Mountain this spring? How's road access doing?
  23. Good work, sounds like you made some good decisions along the way too. A night without the bag is a drag. Were conditions pretty calm up on the summit?
