Denali4jr Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 A friend and I were looking for a good climb and after digging through the beckey guide concluded Pyramid peak offered a fun approach and good climbing. The only things we were woried about were 1. If anyone had even been over emerald ridge in the past week (how hard is it to keep the trail?) 2. How good the snow conditions are. And 3. Whats the earliest time the gate at Longmire is open.Any info would be great. Quote
mattp Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 There are a few feet of snow at Longmire, and even at the start of your hike there might be just enough snow to make following a trail somewhat difficult. Don't trust the rangers when they tell you what time the gate will be open. Quote
Beck Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 This years' road crew is not terribly interested in getting the road open any earlier than nine AM, I wouldn't expect the gate to be swung earilier that 9 until spring. Even if the road's ready. Beck Quote
erik Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 beck maybe you and teddy could service the snow blower and get those boys humming eariler in the morn!!!! hugs Quote
Beck Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 We're too busy taking the pistenbully up to Camp Muir for early morning corduroy runs down the snowfield! Quote
Fairweather Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 Climbed Pyramid Peak from Westside Road junction in Feb 1983. We "scooted" across the Tahoma Creek suspension bridge, which was jacked up at a 45 degree angle to prevent snow-loading, by hooking our snowshoe claws over the higher edge of the bridge decking and hanging on to the cable with our bare hands which froze. ...terrifying. Camped at Indian Henry's..it snowed 2 feet during the night. We summited the next morning in marginal weather. Kicked a large slab loose on the way down. The trip was certainly a "youthful learning experience" which I'm lucky I survived. Quote
Stefan Posted January 3, 2002 Posted January 3, 2002 I recommend going up Kautz creek to Pyramid. I was up the trail two weeks ago. Snow was packed down to about 5000 feet from previous people. Quote
