foraker Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Anyone ever rent a cell phone that works in Europe? My wife is leaving for Ukraine and has never really travelled so far by herself so I'm looking for something she can get here rather than there in case she has problems in transit. I get a few hits off google but have obviously never used any of them. Quote
cj001f Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Buy a cheap unlocked quadband phone off ebay (or if your phone is 900/1800 unlock it and use it), and buy a SIM card for whatever provider is cheap in the Ukraine like maybe this. Some/many airports now have cellphone rental boths at the airport. Or buy a satphone off eBay and get a contract. Quote
Dru Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 my phone will supposedly work in 130 different countries as is no doubt at vastly inflated pricing, though Quote

David Trippett Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 ditto to cj001f....buy an unlocked GSM phone(or get yours unlocked at this place in Redmond http://www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent/nokiaunlocking.htm OR this place in Kenmore http://www.phoneunlocknow.com ) and get the pay as you go sim card for 10$ in Country XYZ. works great... random aside.... I heard that Al Qaeda communicates this way....by buying(or stealing)tons of sims and using them once and discarding. Quote
crackers Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 If you use tmobile or cingular, you can get your phone unlocked as long as it is either a triband or quadband GSM. Either company will do it for you if you've had a contract for more than 90 days and you're in good standing, you just have to call them and ask. If you have a sprint/nextel/verizon phone, you're SOL. Nokia 6610's are fine cheap phones. There is a cell phone card place in one of the airports in Ukraine. I bought one, it worked fine for me. I wish i could remember more about which one I flew into, but it was three years ago. I have no idea how much a phone rental would be, but the SIM card was like $25 and i bought $25 of time which was enough for me to call turkey and the usa a bunch over a weekend. Quote
