RogerJ Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 It's been a challenging winter for me to nail the weather windows. I can almost promise some blue bird days on Hood from April 22 - 29 since I will be visiting my parents in FL. -r Quote
Couloir Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 I can guarantee if the extended forecast holds true I'll be 'ing work and doing some sort, any sort, of Hood lap. Even if I have to do it in the middle of the 'ing night! Quote
OlegV Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 Illumination Rock: Hey Chad, nice shots! This rim probably resembles the conditions on Yocum these days. Quote
Chad_A Posted April 15, 2006 Posted April 15, 2006 Whoa, careful there...I'm so alpine starved that you could probably talk me into it Quote
RogerJ Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 (edited) Chad, Rob, Paul and I went up Tilly Jane today. The weather was suprisingly nice. There was 1-5 inches of new snow on top of a firm pack. No real postholing issues. My preference of skis worked great. Snowshoes were a good call, but as the temps warmed, some of the guys seemed to have some balling issues. I'll let Chad comment on the North Face route as you can see this in the pictures. Here are some highlights: Mt Hood \ Cooper Spur \ North Face Fresh tracks coming down set against the mountain -r Edited April 17, 2006 by RogerJ Quote
Chad_A Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 I think TeleRoss should come down and ski this! I took his photo, and changed the coloring a bit, then sharpened it. Enjoy, folks. It was truly a surprise to have such a beautiful day up there. Quote
Couloir Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Tasty, thanks! Did you guys skin in/snow shoe in from the gate? Quote
RogerJ Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Yes we started at Tilly Jane Trail trailhead. We opted for doing the Pollalie Ridge trail for a change of pace which was pretty thin on the snow front at some spots. I finally packed my skis for 1/2 mile when we hit a bunch of windfall. We continued up the ridge and then over to the Elliot moraine up to about 6900 feet where the cairn is. We took the Tilly Jane trail down from the cabin which is pretty packed and solid. There were no bare spots but I suspect that a few warm days will change that down low. Snow above 4500 feeet is still pretty thick. The little stone shelter at about 6900 feet remains burried and there is a lot of hard pack under fresh layer that fell this weekend. -r Quote
OlegV Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 Nice pictures. Thanks for the update! Looks like the north side routes are getting in shape? Quote
Chad_A Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Hey, Oleg, The bottom ice pitches of the North Face are completely filled in with snow; I'll bet we'll get a window here in a bit when the Eliot Headwall is in primo conditions. Just a guess... Quote
kadyakerbob Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 yeah, looks like this warm weather is going to last until friday. then then the freezing levels going to drop back down, only to go right back up again on saturday. Which hopefully means that there has been some consolidation. so for those who have friday off looks like that will be the day to climb this week. Sandy, Yocum, Reid should be in thursday night friday day. Quote
