RuMR Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 ahh yes,.. fitting in, the elusive unabtainable goal of the geek......worse, desiring to fit in with clubbies The Schwinn Orange Crate is the coolest sting-ray ever built, sting-rays being the coolest bikes ever built....of course geeks would not know that.... and finishing off each others sentences, thats so cute. Luke is a special kind of geek, climbing V10 makes geek way cool. Besides he gets women = not so geek. and its spelled T R O L L not tool. silly rope aid dabbers. yeah...i love it...climbing v10 and pitching off of sub 5.12...go figger... Quote
Dru Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Boulderers don't climb routes because their pads are too heavy to get up there on the "highballs" and they find it hard to do a move without 10 or 15 of their buddies fondling their ass at the crux. Quote
kix Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I think we can safely surmise I do not have any buddies. Quote
kix Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I was just thinking it sounds like I am really missing out on something. Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 yes, but the orange crate paint was metallic with a 6 inch tall 5 speed shifter on the center bar, springer front forks with small tire, a hand brake and a sparkley orange banana seat. that pretty much trumps plain old red. I had one of those when I was about, what, 10? And it had a cheater slick on the back and a sissy bar. It was too cool to ride. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 (edited) yes, but the orange crate paint was metallic with a 6 inch tall 5 speed shifter on the center bar, springer front forks with small tire, a hand brake and a sparkley orange banana seat. that pretty much trumps plain old red. 5 speed? Mine was 3 speed, which (need I say?) is way cooler than 5. And mine had rear coaster brakes for that extra bit of posh. Hand brakes are tacky in comparison, of course. kix Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 apple crate orange crate lemon peeler split pea some had coaster brakes, some had sissy bars, there were minor variations between them I recall. Mine was front hand brake and coaster brake on the cheater slick. or was it? no. It was so hard to choose at the schwinn shop. circa 1968, 69? Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Hey waydaminnit, Dan... how did your 3-speed have coaster brakes on the rear hub? Was there no derailleur? Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 My older brother had a 2-speed stingray (blue) with coaster brakes and you changed the gears by a quick back-pedal. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 what, do I look like an engineer? maybe it was my sweet 1-speed red schwinn that had the coaster brakes. regardless, I stand by my assertion that my childhood bikes were cooler than everyone elses. Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 That's the bike I had; the one on the left. I added a sissy bar. I think it was called the banana split, because it was a gold color, not orange. That bike was the envy of the 'hood. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 that looks like mine, except for the color and that thing on the bar - what is that, a bell? or is the gear shift? Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 that looks like mine, except for the color and that thing on the bar - what is that, a bell? or is the gear shift? That's the incredibly neato cool 5-speed gear shifter throw arm with click-engagement, man. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 It looks like something else. I think I just had a switch on the handlebar. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I've got to say, that schlongular shifter does have a certain muscle-car appeal. But still, my bike was cooler. Did I ever tell you how one time I went around the block 13 times no-hands! And that was a big midwestern block, mind you. Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I've got to say, that schlongular shifter does have a certain muscle-car appeal. It was a sign of the times... :sigh: Did I ever tell you how one time I went around the block 13 times no-hands! And that was a big midwestern block, mind you. No, but somehow, I think we're going to hear the story... Quote
sobo Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Dan, where are you going climbing over Labor Day w/e? Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I think I have made my case. Yeah? How many times can you go around the block no-hands? Quote
