gyselinck Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Anyone know of this guy. I did a climb a week ago and found a summit register with only one entry, signed by him in 1976. My partner (cook) did some reaserach and found someone who thinks they've heard of him. They said he was a soloist, who did most of his routes solo. They also said he ended up dying while soloing a route on Mount Adams. Anyone know anything of this. I am just interested in the history, thats all. Quote
ivan Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 dying on adams - now there's some glory for you! Quote
sobo Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 There's been more than a few. And some of the eastside routes are not for pussies. Some westside routes as well, for that matter... Quote
mtn_mouse Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I seem to remember his name as someone who used to climb with Greg Ball, the guy who used to head up the Washington Trails Assoc. Quote
crazyjizzy Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I climbed with him once, in January of 1978. I wouldn't say he was a soloist. He was friends of Barry Brown, who married Linda Givler. I believe he fell in September of 1978 while climbing the Lava Glacier Headwall. Quote
sobo Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I believe he fell in September of 1978 while climbing the Lava Glacier Headwall. That would have been a nice adventure, and on the northerly side, no less. Quote
AllYouCanEat Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 (edited) The most rockfall I've ever had or been involved in on any route in the cascades was on the Lava HW. But like sobo said, Ivan, there are some classic climbs on the north and east side of adams. Take a look at the Lyman and Wilson Glaciers or even Stormy Monday and the NFNWR. Heck there are even classic volcanic piles (umm headwalls) further east. RIP Bill Fryberger Edited August 25, 2005 by AllYouCanEat Quote
sobo Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 My trip up the North Lyman Glacier was my most memorable ascent of Mt. Adams, ever. It even eclipsed the trip up the Adams Glacier Icefall two years earlier, a route that I thought I would never put beneath another for that particular mountain. Now I want to get around to the east side... Durned In'juns... Quote
ivan Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 no disrespect, and no shitting, there ain't no glory dying on any mountain (except maybe the olympus mons)- still, whatever the truth, adams LOOKS like a shitpile from most vantages... rip bill Quote
DonnV Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 I never climbed with Bill, but met him briefly. He climbed a lot with a mutual friend from back in the day, Paul Hickenbottom. Fryberger and Ball did a new variation on the NW Buttress of Goode, and he and another guy did the FA of the couloir just left of the NE Buttress of Goode. Among other things, I'm sure. Quote
Blake Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 he and another guy did the FA of the couloir just left of the NE Buttress of Goode. Among other things, I'm sure. The line that got skied in early June by some members of this site? (Sky, Teleross...?) Quote
