There's a yellow bus shuttle from Lucerne to Holden in the Summer. Since there is no phone service in Holden, you have to make reservations ahead of time via Postal mail. It's possible to get on the bus without a reservation, but if there's no room left, you're SOL and that's a long way to go in to find out the shuttle is full.

Postal address for Holden:

Holden Village

HC00 Stop 2

Chelan, WA 98816

They serve some pretty good food up there for a reasonable fee (like $6 for all you can eat). It's pretty holy up there though, so you have to hold hands and pray prior to your meal. We went up there last year during Latin American week and had some pretty good mexican food. The ice cream at the village creamery is also highly recommended, but not served on Sunday (go figure).

if you know how to pull some strings, or you bring bikes up with you, i'd recomend them for the descent. it's a fast 11 mile ALL downhill ride to lake chelan, where there are better campign spots, nicer swimminging, and fewer rules, than in the village. Cheap icecream is the place's saving grace.

It's a very laid-back place and people are friendly. Sort of a new-age hippy in-touch-with-the-earth kind of feel... though maybe it's different if you're spending the night there instead of just eating and running...

The busses are waiting for you when the ferry lands at Lucerne (although make reservations in case it's full, like one guy said).

You should try to eat lunch there though. It's only 5$.

It's kind of a trip. You sign a little hymn, and they make funny announcements. The bread and soup were good. An accordion player came dancing through while we were eating.

All-you-can-drink coffee too.

Be very careful with your pack in Holden. Not because of a risk of theft or anything, but because of the infestation of Luthe-Snaffles. Years and years of being fed by young campers has taught them to be VERY aggressive about getting into and tearing into packs. We had to post a sentry (me) last summer to protect the packs while everyone else went in to have lunch. I took some heat from the locals for throwing pine cones, uh, "in the direction of" some of the little bastards. snaf.gif
