selkirk Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Is anyone else a little jazzed about this? I"m sitting at a nice random location in the u district pretending to work! http://www.therainiervalley.com/seattle_wifi.html Initially, the Free Wi-Fi service will be available in Columbia City in the Rainier Valley (Southeast Seattle), and "The Ave" in the University District (Northeast Seattle), followed by rollouts in Occidental Park (Pioneer Square), Freeway Park, Westlake Park, and Victor Steinbrueck Park (Pike Place Market). thelawgoddess Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 that's pretty sweet. when they bringing it to my house, though? i can pick up the uw's cse wifi but - sadly - they do not allow just anybody to connect. i think if i had a good antenna i could pick up a free connection, but unfortunately i have a hill on one side of me and union bay on the other. anybody out there using a cantenna over a relatively long distance? gapertimmy Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/WhereToGetOn there is another grassroots seattle area free wifi thang that has been going on for a few years now. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/WhereToGetOn i've been on that site before. it gets pretty geeky if you start looking around too much. i actually already know quite a few places i can *go* to get free wireless. (heck, i can just walk up the hill and sit in my jeep!) but it'd be really nice to get it from the comfort of my couch. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 i wanted to add that i think it's really great that they're going to offer free wifi in public places where you don't have to buy something to use it. Quote
Thinker Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I always went to the Lusty Lady when I needed a little dose of 'wireless'... Quote
slothrop Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Freeway Park? So the junkies can order a fix online? Quote
foraker Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 you don't the city to do it, there are enough goobers in seattle with unsecure wi-fi setups to surf for free. I did this for a week or so when i first got my laptop and was playing around with it until my wi-fi modem showed up. i can't believe the number of them i can pick up while sitting at home in redmond. iain Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 With the number of people broadcasting, both intentionally and unintentionally, you could easily get by w/o an online service in PDX if you have a wireless card and notebook. No problem. I don't doubt it's similar in Seattle in the right neighborhoods. http://www.personaltelco.net/ Quote
