swaterfall Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 I was thinking the other day that I wanted to do a long ski traverse. The sierras are getting pounded this winter. Anyone done a long ski touring trip in the sierra? I was thinking about doing the JMT or some segments thereof, but there has to be tons of other routes that are as good or better. Quote
pete_a Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 might not be what you're looking for, but the Feb '05 issue of Powder had a article on a Tahoe ski traverse that linked together a lot of the ski areas and the wilderness between them. I think the traverse route in the article took about a week to complete. Quote
cj001f Posted February 12, 2005 Posted February 12, 2005 The big problem with most of the Sierra tours is logistics - the shuttles can be a bitch (esp Sierra High Route), generally end up with loop routes. That said, the best known tours are probably Mammoth-Yosemite and the Sierra High Route. http://www.bobskiing.com/skiindex.htm Those are a week or less, depending on how you want to ski them. Quote
Jim Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Somewhere at home I have an artilce from Coulir magazine that was about the trans-Sierra traverse. Always wanted to do that tour and this year it will likely be great. If you're intrested I could dig out the article from the dusty closet. Quote
Mal_Con Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I have been over Bishop Pass on skis and it is a pretty easy ascent. There are some places where you traverse around lakes that could be dicy avy conditions. From the top it is a nice ski down Dusey Basin though you would run out of snow likely before hitting the JMT. You can also head out on the SHR over Pickhandle Pass and access the back side of the Palisades. Quote
cj001f Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 Consider me interested. I've a half dozen guidebooks - I'm willing to loan you some if'n your interested. I also now live in cali There are lots of "Trans-Sierras" - some go up to 28 days! Quote
