Jim_T Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Anyone been out to the Wallowas lately? What are the snow conditions out there? Any ski-able terrain? thanks! Jim Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 That place has some great stuff. Contact Wing Ridge Ski Tours for more info. Quote
kurthicks Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 i saw a webcam shot earlier today from Wallowa lake, it looked pretty ugly. Maybe TG can give us the info. I'm thinking of heading down there this weekend if the freshiez start falling. Quote
Jim_T Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 Was this the webcam you saw? http://www.lbsites.com/campage.htm If so, yes - it's pretty ugly. All I see is fog. The snow sensors in the area show ~24 inches of snow, and Anthony Lakes claims ~33 inches of snow, so it may not be too bad. I've never been out there in the winter, though. That Wing Ridge area looks very cool ... Quote
chelle Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Talked to TG earlier in the week. No snow in the Wallowas, but there is apparently some good ice forming. Quote
Terminal_Gravity Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Talked to TG earlier in the week. No snow in the Wallowas, but there is apparently some good ice forming. Yes, That is the story. There are some beginer ice gullys open that I have never seen climbable before because they have always been snow choked before. Quote
Jim_T Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 Really? I just talked to the lady at Wing Ridge and she said that the skiing was pretty good, and it snowed 6" last night. We're thinking of staying in the huts this weekend but don't want to do it if there's no snow to ski!! Quote
Terminal_Gravity Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 I don't want to contradict Wind Ridge because they make a living off of people skiiing out here...but it did not snow 6 inches out here yesterday....It is however snowing lightly(very lightly) now. Quote
Jim_T Posted December 31, 2004 Author Posted December 31, 2004 Yup, I believe you. Well I hope there is enough to ski on anyway. We are going to rent the Big Sheep hut for a couple of nights. If anyone else wants to join, you are more than welcome ... send me a PM. Quote
Terminal_Gravity Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 You might be in luck, it dumped maybe 2 inches in town last night...and I might be in luck because the stars are out now and it's cold...and I want ice! Quote
gapertimmy Posted January 3, 2005 Posted January 3, 2005 w00t! heading to mccully this weekend and to a-lakes after, can't freakin wait. Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 There isn't much snow at lower elevations around the Wallowas but higher up there's a considerable amount of powder--enough so that I had wished I had used skis on the approach. Quote
Jim_T Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 The snow was great! We broke trail out to the hut in almost a foot of fresh powder, and it snowed a few more inches over the weekend. There was plenty of snow for skiing, although another foot or two would be ideal to cover up some of the fallen logs in the valleys. Quote
