marylou Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Anyone ever gone? Tell me what you know about the place. Fun? Can it be done on the cheap? What's good to see? Quote
olyclimber Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 My dad is there right now (he didn't even notice the earthquake). He is working on a container ship that is currently in dry dock. If you have any specific questions, he has been there a number of times, and I'll pass them on...however he hasn't been there on non-work time. Quote
mattp Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 I spent two months in Thailand and Indonesia several years back, and we passed through Singapore but did not think there was much of interest there. It is a big city on a small island, with a lot of high rises and stuff. There is a nice botanical garden, but we didn't find near the interest there in the way of things like street vendors, temples, etc. that we found in, say Bangkok. We didn't visit the parks on the Malay Penninsula, not all that far from Singapore, but I bet these are pretty cool. Singapore has a diverse population, and a very strict set of social laws about such things as smoking or even spitting on the sidewalk. Don't get caught smuggling. There were backpacker-type guest-houses where you could stay pretty cheap. Quote
marylou Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 Halfway okay neighborhood with decent-priced lodging, not too far away from everything would be useful. Quote
JoshK Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Just dont spit your gum on the street or you'll be locked up in that police city-state! (seriously!) Also, isn't it the gay sex capitol of Asia? Quote
marylou Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 Yes, I know about the gum thing. I'm not inclined to spit my gum out in the street anyway. Far as the other thing goes, I haven't seen in the research, but I don't really care one way or the other, either. Quote
JoshK Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 Oh, I dont care, I was idly asking. I just found it ironic for a police state to be a bastion of homosexuality. Quote
Double_E Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 changed planes there once; was probably THE most clean, modern, orderly airport i've ever been in. place definitely has some bizzare laws tho. spitting your gum out gets you a caning.... possessing illicit substances gets you life in prison.... selling illicits gets you the death penalty. (i think-- that last one might be Malaysia) Quote
marylou Posted December 30, 2004 Author Posted December 30, 2004 spitting your gum out gets you a caning.... Well, it's illegal to even posess chewing gum in Singapore. It's never a bad idea to research the local laws and customs before traveling abroad, IMO. Quote
Squid Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 spitting your gum out gets you a caning.... What's the safety word? Quote
Blake Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 I was told that the gum thing is in lsrge part due to the high-speed train systems, which had doors that were getting "gummed up". Quote
Thinker Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 spitting your gum out gets you a caning.... What's the safety word? Squid, can you even still chew gum? I haven't seen you recently...any lingering damage from that little accident that happened when falling with the rope between your teeth? Quote
Thinker Posted December 30, 2004 Posted December 30, 2004 what? like this? And just to get this back on track, here's a nice fountain in Singapore from this webpage of Singaporean photos. Quote
marylou Posted January 10, 2005 Author Posted January 10, 2005 Okay, what about Tioman? Anything to recommend there? Quote
