Lambone Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 I was up at Crater Lake NP a week ago hiking with the family. There has got to be some ice climbing up there in the winter. The road is plowed up to the rim in the winter, and there are a couple of roadside low volume falls within around 3 miles from the Visitors Center. Any info, or just a pipe dream? Quote
Lambone Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 shouldn't you be on top of Helen by now? or is it not that time of the month yet... Quote
kurthicks Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Bone, I was looking at the topo last winter for that very reason. I remember seeing some inviting looking areas on the map. it might be worth a recon this winter. Quote
Geek_the_Greek Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 My impression is that yeah, there's a bit (you thinking of Vidae falls? maybe something on Dutton Cliff?), but it's really short and the approach hardly makes it worth it. In the winter, doing anything there that isn't right at the rim demands a pretty hefty ski approach on top of all the driving just to get there. This is what I thought I remember my friend (long-time climber who works full-time there) telling me. However, I emailed him to ask just to clarify. Stand by and if he's sober I'll post his reply within a couple of days. Quote
Lambone Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 cool...yeah, just thinking of last resort desperation opportunities. Quote
Geek_the_Greek Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 Jimmy the Kid says: "At times there are good things on Dutton cliff, but the approach makes it hard to justify. I hope to get out there this winter to climberate it." There you have it. 'Bone, check your pm's for contact info. Quote
Billy Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Just bringing this to the top. Anyone been out there to check it out? Quote
Alex Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 I remember Crater Lake as awesome BC skiing, but little in the way of ice. Quote
