bunglehead Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 So in the book I'm reading, "Krakatoa" by Simon Winchester, I discover the origins of the word, "Antimacassar". Apparently, macassar was an oil from a plant in Indonesia, and the brits loved it, and would gob it on on their heads. This, of course, would stain any highback chair they sat in; thus the anti-macassar was invented to prevent chairs from being stained from hair oil. I learn something every day! Quote
Fairweather Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 Great book! I'm reading it right now. I discovered the origin of the word "amok", and that Darwin had some of his ideas handed to him on a silver platter. Quote
Dru Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 So if someone ran amok with a chairback doiley would they commit a massacre with an antimassacar? Quote
