Dave_Schuldt Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 40 years ago, been 2 good reports on NPR, one from Walter Cronkite. 50,000 US lives and who knows how many Vietnamise lost based on flaky inteligence and fear of losing the election. Those who are interested in Iraq should check this out. Not the same but similar. Quote
RobBob Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Yeah, and I don't know where the idiots here got the idea that Robert McNamara is a hero. Re-cap of Vietnam Quote
willstrickland Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 If you want to focus on anniversaries today, perhaps you should consider Hiroshima. 8:15 am August 6, 1945. Quote
Off_White Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Whaddyu mean Natty, did his momma serve and he was there in egg form? BP's a lot of things, and one of them is too young for Vietnam. Quote
cj001f Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 Yeah, and I don't know where the idiots here got the idea that Robert McNamara is a hero. Re-cap of Vietnam Yawn. The usual military excuses - it was the civilians, yadda, yadda. It's real simple - the military serves the politicians. Which is as it should be. Quote
RobBob Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 ahhhh, grasshopper, go form your opinions of a bumbling sixties figure based on a movie last week if you want to. Your cynicism will not allow you to read and comprehend. Quote

That article was the exact same position my guncle (WW2 vet and career army officer) has argued since the 70's. The Vietnam war was not winnable with the political constraints of the times. That we kept on going is the fault of the President - not SecDefense. Quote
swaterfall Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 cj if you want to sound cool you should refer to the Pres as POTUS and the Secretary of Defecnse as SecDef. Ooooh I'm so Clancy right now. Quote
