fenderfour Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 (edited) How's a bout some slight thread drift? Who uses Big Bros instead of the massive cams? They are quite a bit lighter and could cover the same expansion range. Thoughts? Edited July 22, 2004 by fern Quote
boatskiclimbsail Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 If you're climbing laser-cut perfectly parallel cracks like out in the Utah desert or something they'r great (bigbros). Anywhere else I've tried to use them (Gunks, Daks, NRG, RRG, Seneca, etc.) they were just about useless. I sold mine years ago. Now that I'm out west I wish I had them every now and again but usually make do anyway. Quote
RuMR Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 i've used a valley giant (courtesy of daryl cramer, thanks!)...the big cams may weigh more individually, but they are more "transportable" than big bros, ie, you can shove them along ahead of you and leap frog them...consequently you don't need as many to feel relatively comfortable on a sustained width crack... my $0.02...but i'm just a sporto-geek...so i don't know jack... fenderfour Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 Just because I'm curious - how much do the Valley Giants cost? He does a really limited run on them, doesn't he? Quote
RuMR Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 150 for the #9 and 175 for the #12... They are the shit!! very well built...and smooth...i have daryl's and i have to get it back to him, so i ponied up and bought one for myself...he had a few more in stock early summer... They glide along pretty well, plus w/ a crack that wide, you can actually reach down to the axle and pull the thing up to you... Quote
fenderfour Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 Compared to a #5 camalot, that's down right reasonable. Thanks for the info. Quote
Dru Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 a big bro at the lip of the roof prevents the roof crack from eating your rope there are some alpine climbs they work great on... also useful at J-tree.... the #1 is way too small, the #2 Ok, the #3 the best one, and the #4 is too big except for real specific situations - IMHO and i don't own any either Quote
