minx Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 is it possible to find out the inception date of a website? if so how? Quote
Thrashador Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 This might help. Not sure if it will tell you when a site actually went live but can tell you to whom and when a given url was registered. Quote
iain Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 yeah the whois registry would be your best bet. another one from the main dns organization: http://www.internic.org/whois.html or if you are on a unix system, just a whois (domainname.com) will usually work. whois says this domain name was registered on 11-Aug-2000, for example Quote
slothrop Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 You can do a 'whois' on the domain name and look for "Record created on 01-Jan-2000". That sort of tells you how long the site's been around. Quote
iain Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 this is this thing called 'whois' which might help. Quote
iain Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 one thing to try is 'whois'. then look for the record created field. Quote
badvoodoo Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 If it's a full blown domain (ie. cascadeclimbers.com), you can check the WHOIS on the domain name to get the creation date (http://www.internic.net/whois.html). If it's a personal page, sometimes the software used to create it adds meta tags with the creation date. Quote
Dru Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 whois the climber having the most fun? alex lowe said it was the bestest one. Quote
iain Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 the bestest climber is in the whois database of fun Quote
arlen Posted June 29, 2004 Posted June 29, 2004 Wait! What you're looking for is whois on the domain name. Quote
CascadeClimber Posted June 30, 2004 Posted June 30, 2004 The only thing you can tell from the WHOIS record is when the name was registered by the current lessee. This has almost nothing to do with the status of the related web site: There are plenty of long-registered domain names without related web sites, and there are domain names that have had related sites for much longer that the current lessee has had rights to the name. It's kind of like saying you can tell how old a car is by the date the current owner bought it. -L Quote
minx Posted June 30, 2004 Author Posted June 30, 2004 what i was able to find w/a whois search is the date that the site was registered and the last updated date. i knew the site was active. i was more interested in when the site came to be. a little personal sleuthing. that's all. Quote
