badvoodoo Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 I saw something pretty freaky this last weekend. I saw a Climb Max ATC FALL OFF someone's gear loop when the wire loop detached from the metal. On closer inspection, the other end looked like it wasn't too far away from the same fate. No apparent damage, trauma, or wire damage could be seen. Anyone heard of any recalls from Climb Max, or run across this before? Regardless, I'm checking my ATC fanatically from here on out. Quote
willstrickland Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 I've seen broken keeper cables on the old style BD ones. Which is why they went to the rigid loop instead of coated wire I think. It's not a big deal, it still would have held a fall. ClimbMax people are cool, I'm sure they'll take care of ya. Quote
badvoodoo Posted May 12, 2004 Author Posted May 12, 2004 the keeper loop fell off the metal body? Yes, there was no sign of cable left in the metal body, ie. no break in the cable. Quote

schnitzem Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Its just the keeper, look at all the old style belay plates that use a shoelace to keep the device from running off on your rope. no big deal, although it does lower general trust in the equipment! Quote
snoboy Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Should still be fully functional, but gear that falls apart never really gives me peace of mind. Quote
rbw1966 Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Take it back to climb max. They'll take care of you. Are you sure the actual brand is "Climb Max" though and not some other manufacturer? I'm pretty sure they don't manufacture any hardwear. Quote

Rigid keeper loop devices, like the Sheriff, can develop small cracks radiating from the roll pin that attaches the rigid loop to the body. Pin can just be seen on the side of the device below. http://www.sportextreme.com/Se_shop/Images/ProductImages/HB_Wales_SherifRigid_440.jpg Cracks in the body are far scarier than a broken cable. Worth inspecting your device if you use one of these. Quote
Rainier_Wolfscastle Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 The cables are typically glued in with epoxy. It's not really a safety issue. It's only purpose is to give you somewhere to clip the device. Quote
