Jeff Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Can anyone recommend a good company to use that will cover me for international climbing? I'm going to the Andes and I need some sort of medical coverage if I get hurt. thanks. Quote
wingy Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 they do have a 6000m ceiling on the insurance -- buy the rider if you are going higher -- still AAC is the best deal Quote
cj001f Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 American Alpine Club The AAC covers rescue costs only - it specifically doesn't include medical coverage: "8)Costs or expenses of medical treatment except for emergency first aid rendered to the Member in connection with and during the course of the Emergency Rescue and Evacuation; 9)Costs of transport to hospitals other than the hospital with facilities for treating the Member’s injuries which is located nearest to the point of rescue." brook_alongi Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 1st, check with your regular medical insurance provider, if you have one. Most domestic medical plans include international emergency medical care, but not evacuation and/or transport. I have changed insurance companies over the years, but blue cross, aetna, and group health offered to reimburse me should I have to go to the emergency room in South America, Asia, Canada, and Africa, (I'm assuming Europe as well).  Check with Access America, a company who offers emergency medical care and evacuation travel insurance. Or you can PM me for more info.  http://www.accessamerica.com  Have fun on your trip. Quote
lummox Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 bmc offers better insurance. but you got to live in a commonwealth country. it aint worth it. Quote
chris Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Another source is the Diver's Alert Network, DAN, which offers medical insurance and evacuation insurance to members - and being a diver is not a requirement for membership! The AAC/DAN Memberships are a good way to go because the AAC covers you till you hit pavement, and DAN can covers from there... Quote
chris Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Oh, and AAC insurance is through World Wide Outfitters. The WWO simply confirms that you have had an accident and sufficient billing, then sends you the check (leaving the responsibility of paying your bill to you). I broke my leg last June, and WWO sent me a check directly for my helicopter bill, which I then had to deposit and re-write. Quote
chelle Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I've bought the WWO insurance before. Thankfully haven't needed it. Make sure you plan in advance or you'll have to pay extra to expedite the paperwork. Quote
