Why do I think it was Al Qaida? The scale is an order of magnitude larger than anything ETA has ever pulled off. Second ETA claims they always announce an attack before it happens. Also Al Qaida has the motive to do it.

Here's a note I got from my Dad, who lives North of Barcelona:

 

We really aren't close to Madrid (although closer than you are). We are about 8-9 hours by car away. It is horrible and the people in across Spain are very upset. They have had quiet vigils in cities all across Spain. The people gather on the streets and stand quietly together, some with signs decrying the violence. Some paint their hands white and raise them above their heads facing out. That is a statement against terrorism.

The ABC article says, however, that the explosive is not Titadine but some other kind of Spanish manufacture, and the detonators are copper, rather than the aluminum that ETA generally uses.
