lummox Posted February 15, 2004 Posted February 15, 2004 i read an article in todays latimes about las vegas being a destination for suicides. reminded me of that story posted here bout seeing the jumper. here is an exerpt from the times: 'Every year, desperate men and women make the pilgrimage to the gambling capital to kill themselves. More than once a month, a visitor commits suicide here, according to Clark County Coroner records dating to October 1998. By comparison, in Atlantic City, N.J., about one-third as many nonresidents took their lives during that period. "They pick Las Vegas and kill themselves," former Clark County Coroner Ron Flud said. "It's a fact." But saying exactly why is not so straightforward. Experts and family members have their thoughts — from the city's culture of anonymity to despair, in some cases, over gambling losses. But each case is different. As one suicide note said, "Here there are no answers."' that shit is at odds with the feeling i get when i visit las vegas. climbing in red rocks makes me want to live: i place more pro than i would in granite. suicide seems like such a permanent solution to temporary problems. sucks for sure. peace and love all. klenke Posted February 15, 2004 Posted February 15, 2004 Seems to me, if you were going to kill yourself (maybe by default, you thought no one cared about you, thus you'd have no one to give your money to in a will), you would take all your money with you down to Vegas and try to make the big payday and thereby turn your life around. When that fails, as it invariably does, they turn back to their original plan: to kill themselves. Quote
lancegranite Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 You never hear about it here, that's for sure. The local news outlets rarely report such things. Two stories: A young man jumped off the Stratosphere, Just as the guards came around the corner, he turned and stepped off. Reported in the local Citylife: a man jumped INSIDE the Luxor's main casino. this story was not reported by the local news.... So much money keeps things quiet sometimes....and we don't want bad press on the AP wire,.. do we? chilling.... Quote
Fejas Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Vegas would be the perfact place to go... You could take all your money, and all your credit out, and go big gambling and such. If you won big, it might inspire you to live, and if you lost, them there is easy access to may tall roof tops, or easy access to alot of drugs that would be sure to do the trick. Plus you could get like five hookers to jump your bones right before you took the dive... good times! Quote
Dru Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Thet should post odds on it, or have a free electric chair in the middle of the casino at Caesars Palace. Or maybe you could have a clown punch you to death at Circus Circus! Quote
Greg_W Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 But the commute is good. Well, there you go. That settles it. Let's all move there. Actually, you guys all go first, 'cause then my commute will be a lot easier. Quote

cracked Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 I would get SAD from 340 days of sun. Yuck! Quote
lancegranite Posted February 19, 2004 Posted February 19, 2004 Another cover up is based around people from places like Minnesota, New England and Washington bursting into flames after a day at the pool. The desert sun combined with $7.00 drinks and oh-so-much exposed skin has been linked to a number of fatal sunburns. Local hospitals are bracing for another spring break of terror. "These kids come down here from Vermont and end up like the nazis in Raiders of the lost ark " said Mayor Oscar Goodman in a recent press comfrence." A program of pre-tanning is reccomended for people who have not seen the sun in more than 5 months" Goodman added, replying to reporters questions about the shortages of "paba 70" sunscreen at local drugstores. " These people start to like the rain... can you believe it? " Goodman said with a shudder. Quote

marylou Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 The deal with the underreporting of suicides in the media is that most papers rarely, if ever, report on them. It's some code of journalism thing, perhaps someone who knows more about why could elaborate. Quote
scott_harpell Posted February 20, 2004 Posted February 20, 2004 It is because there are so many copycat suicides. THe same is true with golden gate bridge suicides and why they stopped counting the number of suicides there. Quote
