tshimko Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 Have I got the name right for the traverse from Eldorado to hwy 20 via Dorado Needle, Perdition Pk, Backbone ridge, Newhalem Pks, Isolation Pk, Snowfield, Paul Bunyan's Stump, Pinnacle, Pyramid? Nothing came up for a search on that name. Any help? Quote
mattp Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 I believe that is what the Skoog's call it, but I haven't heard of anybody else doing it (though they probably have) so I don't think you will find much discussion on this bulletin board. I once heard Lowell say that it was the hardest of the three great N-S traverses (Picket, Inspiration, and Ptarmigan) in terms of it's huge up and down struggles with elevation. Quote
geordie Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 Tom- I know this as the Isolation Traverse. NOLS has done variations of this in the past. It gets done more often than you might guess. PM me for more. PS - saw you in trafffic in t-town back in November, small world. Quote
JasonG Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 I've heard Lowell refer to it as the Isolation traverse. I think the inspriration traverse is from Eldo out to Primus and Thunder Creek. PM Lowell and he'd probably have any info you'd want . .. Quote
Lowell_Skoog Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 "Isolation Traverse" is the name our party gave the route after we skied it in 1983 (since it goes over Isolation Peak and it is...well...isolated). I don't know if anybody called it that before then. Actually, Matt, the Picket traverse is the hardest of the three routes you mentioned. Here are a couple of links to my journal notes from the two times I skied the route: http://www.alpenglow.org/ski-history/notes/ms/lds-journal.html#lds-journal-p159 http://www.alpenglow.org/ski-history/notes/ms/lds-journal.html#lds-journal-p912 Quote
mattp Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 Thanks for the correction, Lowell. At the time, I thought it surprising to hear you say something about how the "Isolation" was harder than the Pickett Traverse - but I guess I simply misunderstood you. Anyway, here's to cc.com for providing a place where someone can ask questions and get answers from someone who actually has them. Quote
Alex Posted January 5, 2004 Posted January 5, 2004 Alot of really good trip ideas you have there, Lowell... Alex Quote
tshimko Posted January 6, 2004 Author Posted January 6, 2004 Thanks to all, especially Lowell, Geordie, Paul (with a PM). Matt's got it spot on, this is cc.com at it's best. In less than 12 hrs I've gotten all sorts of valuable resources. Quote
