No "Scouring of the Shire" Â This has been known for quite some time, since Sam didn't get the box of seed and soil from Galadriel in the Gifting scene in the extended first DVD. I'm disappointed, but I'm curious how they're going to resolve it. Quote
chelle Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 It's just going to be about the big war, then they'll all ride off into the sunrise. The movies suck compared to the books IMO. Quote
E-rock Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 If Shelob looks like some big tarantula, I'm gonna be pissed. Quote
stinkyclimber Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 Prepare to be pissed: in the half second I saw of her in a preview she looked...wait for it...like a giant tarantula. Â Fuck, I thought they'd have the scouring of the Shire for sure since it was in a dream sequence in the first or second movie. Fuckers. Â Oh well. I am just happy for now because the BC Ferry strike is finally over so I can catch some turns this weekend. Quote
plexus Posted December 12, 2003 Posted December 12, 2003 No Sharkey?!! It's all because they had to find time to make Arwen a bigger part!!! Quote
badvoodoo Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 Seems like they started off strong enough with the first movie sticking to the book as close as need be (minus the Barrows, but that was pretty disposable), and they've just been pitching stuff out more and more. It would be nice if they actually filmed the scouring of the shire and included it in the extended edition release like some of the missing parts in Two Towers.... Quote
sk Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 so at the very beginning of the two towers extended there is a scene where sam and frodo are rapping down a cliff and sam drops a box... I thought that was the one from Galadrial... if it wasn't that scene was totaly useless Quote
chelle Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 I thought leaving out Tom Bombadil and some of the cool stuff in their journeys with the Ents was a bad move. The Ents and the other tree characters whose name I can't remember were largely responsible for the win over Saruman's army, not the men. Quote
badvoodoo Posted December 13, 2003 Posted December 13, 2003 Actually, the extended edition of the Two Towers DOES include the trees in the final battle, which I thought should have been left in too. But Tom Bombadil really wasn't critical to the storyline, and unfortunately, no matter how much a filmmaker wants to stick to a book, things must be sacrificed to keep a film moving and to keep the audience engaged. Ratboy Posted December 14, 2003 Posted December 14, 2003 The Ents taking down Isengard wasn't just in the extended DVD of Two Towers, it was a critical part of the end of the theatrical release. They added several more scenes for the DVD, but they were always there in the theatrical version. I could not have been hapier with Bombadil being left out. That's the only part of the book I dislike. Although it also meant leaving out the Barrow-downs, which I do like. Quote

chelle Posted December 14, 2003 Posted December 14, 2003 I guess I need to see the extended version to see the stuff I missed out on. Â Woke up this morning and saw the sun and thought... There is still good in the world Mr. Frodo. All hope is not lost. Quote
nolanr Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Didn't leaving the Shire take up nearly half of the first book? They managed to streamline that quite a bit for the movie out of necessity. I loved the first one, didn't like the second one so much, still have high hopes for the third and will see it shortly. Quote
nolanr Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Oh yeah, and if you haven't read the book you have no idea about Shelob and Gollum's evil little plan. They should have left her completely out of the previews, even the one second long shot of her you get. Why ruin the surprise? Quote
