lummox Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 A bullet fired in the air during a Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony came down and struck a participant in the head, critically injuring him, authorities said. Gregory Allen Freeman, 45, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in the Saturday night incident that wounded Jeffery S. Murr, 24. About 10 people, including two children, had gathered for the ceremony. The man who was being initiated was blindfolded, tied with a noose to a tree and shot with paintball guns as Freeman fired a pistol in the air to provide the sound of real gunfire, Sheriff Fred Phillips said. A bullet struck Murr on the top of the head and exited at the bottom of his skull, authorities said. Freeman fled the ceremony but was arrested near his home, authorities said. A 1 in 50,000,000 shot to make a bullet shot up in the air come back down on a specific guy's head. Admittedly, the firer wasn't trying to hit anyone. He was only trying to shoot the black night, it symbolically representing a Black Knight. But, if there's a huge crowd, the odds go up. I have always wondered if this has ever happened or has happened regularly. Quote

Off_White Posted November 25, 2003 Posted November 25, 2003 Inhabitants of the lil' town of Oakville west of Centralia (in Washingotn) have a history of shooting their guns in the air to celebrate 4th of July. It always inspired me to avoid the place... However, I do think that "aggravated assault" is reaching a bit, doesn't assault have to include some intent to harm? It seems clear that it wasn't the goal of the doofus responsible. Quote

There are public service announcements in a lot of cities in CA. Not making it a race thing, but I think it has something to do with how the hispanic population celebrates New Years. There are a few incidents of the bullet coming through the roof of someone's house and killing them. When I was down in S. America for New Years 2001, the Argentinians in the camp next to us were heating up spent fuel canisters to celebrate. Made some really big explosion sounds. I thought they might blow themselves up.
