Rainier_Wolfscastle Posted November 1, 2003 Posted November 1, 2003 Can any one comment on the warmth between these two? I can't seem to make any sense of the insulation weights they list. The Cloudveil is 4 oz lighter overall, so I assume it is not as warm. Any comments? Quote
Beck Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 are they both offset quilted? baffled vs. sewn thru? examine the weights of the insulation.... and body weight of insulation (oz./sq yard)compared between the two, vs. sleeves. are they both the same fill? they are both going to be great coats, I think. The DAS is almost too warm for lower cascade stuff, but you be the judge... Quote
IceIceBaby Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 DAS is great Wildthings belay parka is better but the Arc’teryx fission belay parka is best I think that Primaloft is the best synthetic insulation base on many parkas that I owned in the past and finally got it right BTW the Lowe Alpine one that they did was a bomber but on the Heavy side Quote
Lambone Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 I have the Cloudveil. It is very warm. I like the cut/fit better than the DAS parka I tried on. No complaints. Quote
Rainier_Wolfscastle Posted November 2, 2003 Author Posted November 2, 2003 The Cloudveil uses 260 gram insulation in body & the DAS uses 5.3 oz insulation in the body. If you convert the 260 to ounces, it comes out to 9.3 oz, so I must not be figuring it out correctly? I need a hooded jacket for Aconcagua in January & I like synthetic insulation, so one of these two should do the job. The WT belay jacket is pretty nice too. I have the Primaloft jacket from them & like it alot (although the cuffs are too small & don't stretch). Quote
Kevin_Ristau Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 Integral Designs Dolomitti with hood. 5 oz. Primaloft insulation. Quote
layton Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 That integral designs parka isn't gonna be warm enough for cold ass belays. If you are a warm person, the wild things is a good bet. Patagucci's is almost the same, but more $$, and not quite as warm. I think the GoLite 6 Month Night is the warmest, lightest, and cheapest (a hundred smackers) one out there. Just as warm as my trusty Marmot Parbat Parka. Quote

If u really into the WT just give them a call and ask them to modify the parka to your liking most likely they will do it for no additional charge they good like that But if u would like to bring only one shell/parka to the mountains the Fission is the way Quote

Or is the Fission this new miracle piece that you can use while climbing, and as a belay jacket? The Cloudveils nice - good cut. The DAS is nice - and $150 here Quote

The DAS is nice - and $150 here the Arc'Teryx Fission is my choice especially if u HAVE to smoke crack and yes it dose answers 2 needs of insulation and shell incase it will rain needles to say saving weight in the process Believe me it is no fun to be wet in your parka EVEN if it is synthetic insulation you will be cold and you will feel any wind gust I think in the north cascades it especially come to it own since the weather can easily change from clear to rain It did happen to me couple of times and from now on I always carry the fusion with me Quote
cracked Posted November 2, 2003 Posted November 2, 2003 I got my Golite Coal pretty much saturated the other day, while wearing it as a shell/insulation piece, and I was warm, dry, and happy. My 6 Month Night awesome, and for 100 bucks, it can't be beat. Quote
timo Posted November 3, 2003 Posted November 3, 2003 6 month now $79 at: http://www.northernmountain.com/pgi-ProductSpec?516951 Quote

I just went through this comparison process over the past few weeks. Ended up getting the Cloudveil Enclosure. Reasons? 1) I'd say the DAS is the warmer of the two, based on the highly scientific method of wearing them both around the store for 20 minutes in street clothes. 2) I think the DAS might be TOO warm for stuff in OR/WA. 3) The two jackets have different kinds of insulation, so comparing insulation weights as a guide to warmth is pretty worthless. 4) The insulation in the DAS makes it less stuffable. 5) I liked the cut of the Enclosure much better. 6) The Enclosure hood has that nice elastic trim to help it conform over a helmet. 7) The Enclosure has the elastic skirt thingy on the inside. 8) One of the Enclosure's interior mesh pockets is divided, which is kind of nice. 9) At MSRP, the Enclosure is cheaper (just a bit). 10) I found an XL Enclosure in last year's shade of blue that was marked down 20% because of the color change from last year to this year. Rainier_Wolfscastle Posted November 3, 2003 Author Posted November 3, 2003 Thanks. I think I'm going to get the Enclosure Parka. The Golite for $79 is a good deal, but is heavier (although warmer I am sure) & it looks like it has a really long waist (I prefer shorter). The DAS for $150 is also a good deal, but I like darker colors as they dry faster in the sun. The only one available is Gecko green (yuck!). Quote
