Al_Pine
I just replaced the power-steering belt. Now it squeals worse than it did before. Anybody care to clue me in to some tips for a car-mechanic mortal to tighten that thing better? Pulling up on the PS motor with one arm while tightening the bolts just didn't do the trick. Thankyouverymuch
catbirdseat
If the belt is tensioned properly and still slips then it may be that your power steering pump is bad and needs to be replaced.

vegetablebelay
You've got to moisten the new belt to lube it up. The best way is to turn the car on and use your tongue on it as the belt goes around.
rbw1966
Make sure you have someone take pictures as you do this so you maintain an accurate record of your repairs.

Look in the book to find out what is proper tension. Too much is bad. I can lead to premature bearing failure.
Al_Pine
Thanks you guys . I assume that if the power steering fluid gets low again a couple of days after I top it off, that that is probably a bad sign about my PS pump too? Necronomicon
Pour some oil on the belt to lubricate it.
whirlwind
yeah sure then thuogh a match to it cause its got to heat up the oil to shrink it to the pulley system

scott_harpell
get some UV dye... put it in the pump drive it... get a UV lamp, check for leaks. if you are lucky it is the hoses...
Fairweather
Teh belt is likely encountering resistance from the PS drive pulley because of a bad bearing. Remove the belt and grab the PS pulley with your hand. Pull it back and forth vigorously...there should be no play whatsoever. If there is, it is probably a bad bearing. (or a stripped drive shaft) You may be able to replace the bearing, depending on the type of pump/availability. Otherwise, replace the entire unit for $$$. As for the leaks, you could try to stop steering so much!
ridehikeclimbski
Some pumps will have some end (horizontal) play which is fine , its the vertical (up and down) movement of the pulley/shaft that will indicate a failed bearing . Also spin the pulley if its noisy and rough , its shot , however when turning it you may feel the vanes in the pump moving the fluid which is normal. Some pump assemblies have a square hole in the pump bracket so you can use a socket ratchet for leverage to tighten belt so you dont pry on pump housing . If your PS pump is part plastic ,and aluminum , sometimes the oring between them will leak. Hope that gives you more info ! Good Luck Or just leave your belt off and use manual steering to build up your wimp ass arms for climbing !
