JoshK Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 How broken does the sulfide get this time of year? I've only been on it quite early in the season. I was considering it as a route to haul a 100% beginner up, so any sort of real crevasse challenges would have to be avoided. I guess another way to ask this question would be to ask if it's a reasonable solo this time of year. thanks, -josh Quote
mattp Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 You can do it, Josh. I skied it, in October, in fog, on a relatively low snow year. I did it just for the novelty (trying to get turns all year), and there was a short section where we had to take the skis off; there was a little bit of bare ice and some minor wandering around crevasses, but nothing serious (we did not put on crampons and there were no scary bridges or anything). It'll be fine unless by "any sort of real crevasse challenges would have to be avoided" you mean that your friend doesn't want to have to walk near step over anyting they might fall into. Quote
JoshK Posted September 11, 2003 Author Posted September 11, 2003 Thanks, Matt, that is what I was looking for. By any 'real challenges' I simply met anything where I would expect them to hold a fall of mine should one happen. I dont think stepping over some cracks will be a problem. Quote
stinkyclimber Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 Yup, I'd say no worries either. I was up the Chimneys 3 weeks ago, and the Sulphide looked real solid - very few slots, if any, on the route. The folks we met at the top who had come up that way had said it was cake. We haven't had that much warm weather since then, so it probably hasn't changed much (if anything, bridges will be more solid now with lower temps). Quote
scot'teryx Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 What Glacier? Taken in late July of this year Quote
AllYouCanEat Posted September 11, 2003 Posted September 11, 2003 Here is a few pics from a late summer trip. http://cascadeclassics.org/MountShuksan/Sulfide/Fall021/Sulfide_Fall021.htm I was thinking of going for a ski up there this weekend, but decided to run up baker again. Better skiing! Quote
ChocChick Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 Hey! I just found out from the rangers today that sulphide is looking good. Crevasses are wide open but you can still get around them. I'm planning on doing it next weekend. Wear a helmet, lots of rockfall, but the route is in good shape. Quote
Mike Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 We did about a month ago and it was in great shape - piece of cake. Most of the sulphide is low gradient and just doesn't breakup all that much. Quote
scot'teryx Posted September 12, 2003 Posted September 12, 2003 Guess I Don't the difference between Sulphide and Sitkum Must have been a late night post........... scot'teryx said: What Glacier? Taken in late July of this year Quote
salbrecher Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 All you can eat, which route are you skiing? We'll be skiing the coleman on Saterday. Quote

We will be on the Boulder Park Cleaver. The CD is in pretty good condition considering the hot summer, better than the prior two years anyhow. I had a blast skiing down a few weeks ago. Enjoy the new snow! If plans change it'd be awesome to hook up with some fellow CC'ers. There is a chance we'd be doing the CD still. Have a great weekend... Quote
salbrecher Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 If you switch routes i'll be the one in a neon and black action suit. Quote
Fairweather Posted September 13, 2003 Posted September 13, 2003 http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/mt_baker_climbing_notes.shtml Current conditions. Shuksan and Baker. Check it out. Quote
