Bug Posted June 28, 2003 Share Posted June 28, 2003 Couldn't sleep Thursday night. Stared at teh weather report and started packing in spite of a yanked calf muscle. About 4AM I was off to head up the Emmons. Hopefully meet up with Kevin at camp Curtiss. At milepost 61 my timing belt popped and I coasted to a stop. After a few driveby's a cowboke and his son stopped and loaned me his cellphone. No one answered so I left a message. Awhile later a park employee stopped and let me use his phone. Got hold of my wife in Redmond and had her call a tow truck from Enumclaw. He showed up about 8AM and took me to Cascade Auomotive, a medium size shop with good old fashioned small town service (360 825-4071). They had me back on the road at noon. Bug Posted July 1, 2003 Author Share Posted July 1, 2003 I was going 65. It almost trashed the valves. I killed it immediately and coasted uphill to a pullout. Anyone want to buy a used Escort cheap? Stephan, I can't look like a climber unless I am climbing. When I hitch-hike I look like a hitch-hiker. The only time I don't look like what I'm doing is when I try to surf. mtn_mouse Posted July 3, 2003 Share Posted July 3, 2003 Left blue mtns for a good alpine start (about noon). Encountered difficult route conditions driving through Pasco. Appreciated though. Followed obvious descent gully through Kennewick and Richland. Made awesome time though in my 4 cylinder mtn vehicle. Stopped for a carb load in Umatilla.. not sure what state or country Umatilla is in. Seeing visions of glacier clad mountains as I headed west. Fan belt snapped at I 84, Hermiston. Mtn vehicle short hauled to Pendleton. Trip over, found my glacier in a cool McDonalds ice cream. Enjoyed the 110 degree weather. Home nursing wounds. Mtn mouse. Mike_Gauthier Posted July 3, 2003 Share Posted July 3, 2003 nice route description mtn mouse... this is from our mutual friend, "ted the unabomber" and his lastest trip to rainier... btw mtn mouse, he's scortching some "dead red" on grill right now, before he slogs up to muir to "clean the scene" tomorrow. ted left sequim today, taking his abnormally indirect route through onalaska. avoided the most logical path, and normal grocery stores. while enroute, he picked up a supply of "pork butts" (3 lbs, for real) for dinner and 1 gallon of cheap vanilla ice cream (of course.) stopped by "the tool" in morton based on PC (seems predictable given ted's vehicle etal). limped that old bomb up to longmire with plenty of garbage in the back of the truck. the ravens had a field day, and now my yard looks like hell. no rescue insurance to cover the after effects and clean up... oh well, thankfully the "baby-sitter" is well stocked and the martini's are pouring. Ted said he never wanted to see spanaway, yelm, or hwy 161 again. So, the reason for the circuitous route. Is it true that muir snowfield has become a 4000' sled hill?
