Here's an idea I just had... Although I am guessing it has already been tried and proven impossible. POWDERED BEER!!! Just think of the possibilities. Have your favorite beverage while on a big wall, the top of a mountain, or on a backpacking trip. Any chemists around here? Is this at all feasible? I am betting that alcohol's chemical properties would not lend themselves well to turning it into a powder. But I still think it's a grand idea!

you cant dehydrate alcohol, as there is no water in the alcohol part..altho if i remember correctly high school chem, alcohol+acid=ester+water so maybe there is some chem lab way of turning esters and water back into alcohol, you would then have to get the acid out somehow.

the best you could do would be take 100% ethanol and mix it with powdered flavours and water but why bother trying to recreate the taste of beer when you can just put the ethanol shots in your gatorade or cytomax or hot cocoa or whatever.

You can do it. In fact, dehydrated mixed drinks were marketed some years back (I had a can of the stuff, but never tried it). As I recall, the alcohol was bound to something to form granules.

It has been attempted in a few forms. Back when I worked for Widmer Brewing there was industry talk of condensing beer into syrup but it was not possible to do in a single serving format, the flavor was completely altered. That was five years ago, I would not know if they ever pulled it off or not. (the industry as a whole, not widmer)

The solution I have found is to go with something that has a high strength to weight ratio, usually scotch. Or in the case of wall climbing where you already have an ass-load of weight just suck it up and pack the biggest strongest beers you can. Fosters Special Bitter works well for this.
