North_by_Northwest Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I just bought some Oval Wires today and I think they are a really great biner design. They are easy to clip (I tested in the store) and still have the smooth oval design I like. They also seem to be larger than regular ovals and capable of clipping more at one time without hangups. They are also pretty lightweight. I think these are the best multi-purpose biners I've ever seen, great for aid, alpine or even sport if they were in quickdraws. And who asked what ovals are good for? The price ain't bad either. Here's a link: http://www.bdel.com/gear/rock/oval_wire.php Quote
Attitude Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Are they big enough to use in a carabiner brake with a big (10.5) rope? The Omega oval wires are not. Quote
COL._Von_Spanker Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 You can't use the OP's in a biner brake? If you use the three biner version can you use them? Quote
Attitude Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 The Omega oval wiregates are smaller on the inside than the regular BD ovals. There was way too much friction with a three biner brake with my big fat rope. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Aren't wire gates kind of jingus for racking, though? Seems like the hook would always be snagging on shit every time you needed a piece. Quote
jkrueger Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Depends on what you're racking... Racking cams on wire gates is fine, as I've never experienced a hook snagging on the gear loops or a gear sling. Wired nuts and hexes, however, will tend to snag on biner hooks (keylock biners solve the hook problem). Quote
slothrop Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 Wiregates aren't any more awkward for racking than a regular biner. I have a couple keylocks that I use for racking nuts, though, and like them much better than biners with a nose on them. No hangups. Nice new website BD's got. It'd be nice if the technical specs (weight, gate opening size, etc.) were on each product page, though. Quote
